Safe T Plus

Does anyone know specifically which Safe T Plus product and Kit will fit my 1996 36' U295?

I don't see that age unit listed on their website.  Do any of you have one?

I also had a Safety T Plus put on my 2003 U295. It made a big difference in handling. Money well spent. Just call the company in Georgia. They will fix you up. I put the largest one offered on my FT. Be aware, in my case the Safety T Plus came with the incorrect hardware. as a result, I had inferior hardware put on until I received the correct hardware. Safety T Plus paid for the new hardware, reimbursement for the inferior hardware, reinstallation & postage.

Good Luck,

Dr. Dee

Thanks RT, I think I found it exploring their pdf rather than automatic search by manufacturer.

Are you pleased with it and find it a worthy upgrade?

Provided a significant improvement in tracking, plus added control in blowouts, dropping off road edge.  Well worth it.  One of the best mods of all imho. Looking at the website and remembering, STP Unit: 41-230  (the blue one)  mount kit is Kit: U-148K but call and verify. My coach is a 96 U295 as well.

After installing with such great results I added a stabilizer (Blu Ox True Center) to my sister's U320.  It is adjustable on the fly for crosswinds, crowns etc but not nearly as effective as the Safe T Plus at half the price.

And as long as you're in the neighborhood, dial in a touch more toe-in if you're having wandering issues.

Steering stabilizers can hide problems-wrong wheel alignment, front end wear, wrong tire pressures, unbalanced loading, etc.  They're OK for insurance, but our coaches shouldn't need them as a matter of course.

I understand exactly what you're saying! Totally agree the Safe T Plus can not replace proper loading and weight arrangement, tire pressure checks, good tires, and wheel alignment! I have all of those things on my regular checklist. The biggest reason I'm interested in the Safe T Plus is the  additional layer cross wind and blow out protection.

Thank you for the reminder sir, something that's good for all of us to be reminded of!

See ya down the road!

Alan, I think mine was about $250.  If you don't mind getting under the coach it's an easy DIY project. On my coach it made a huge difference in handling when an 18 wheeler blows by. The blowout 'assistance' feature is something I hope we never need but I'm glad it's there.

Once installed it is maintenance free and is guaranteed as long as you own it.

I had a heck of a time driving home after I picked up my rig (1200 miles). Never drove a Class A in my life so just chalked it up to being a green horn. Now I've been reading about Safe-t-Plus and really want to get this installed. I know I won't be able to install this myself so what would be your guess on labor costs? Once march comes around, I'm taking "Woody" in for wheel and tire balancing and to check out the alternator/charging issue so I can figure out if this labor cost will be affordable. I was white knuckled all the way home since my schedule was always on the truck drivers schedule so I was blown around alot :)

I agree with Brett's post.

My rv biz experience was that these things covered up incorrect other things.

Periodic removal of the system and complete professional inspection of the coaches entire suspension then reinstallation would allow the unit to preform its main use.  Blowout protection.

Our coach barely moves when opposing truck traffic winds hit us.

I have intentionally steered closer to the center line many times just to marvel at our coaches lack of movement.

Lots of contributing factors and no way am I telling someone a safety system is not a good idea but only after a full system go through which I did when we got our coach.

Non preloaded wheel bearing caused a certain amount of steering wander in our coach versus preloaded as an example

Kathie,

You should not have had those problems.  Take it to a good alignment shop and have everything checked over.  When all is within  specs it should drive well.  Only then then have it realigned.  Now you can put the Safe T Plus on.

Ask on here as someone may know a good shop in your area.

Agree with above advice - get the basic factory suspension lined out first, then install the "add-ons".

As far as labor cost to install, should not be very much.  Unit simply bolts on - one bracket on the axel, and the other onto the steering linkage.  I'd guess a hour max, at whatever the going labor rate.

great advice. I live in Madison, WI so only nite hawk is the closest and he's about 2 hrs away. I do have a diesel mechanic shop up the road from me who does work on Motorhomes also (M&J Truck and auto repair). Thought I would go in and visit them to find out what they do and make sure they can get this all done. I would also like them to check out the air bag and leveling systems. Haven't had an opportunity for any of this to be checked out since I bought "Woody" Safe-T-plus is something I would definitely like to have installed when everything shows it is in line. Thank you very much. Can't wait to get going on my first trip. Got to get my playlist of music loaded up first though :)

I just had my alignment and front end checked out and was good to go.  Based on this thread I got a quote for the Safe T.  They wanted 900 plus for the Safety + another 170 or so for a custom bracket.  3.5 hours for install at 95 per, a new alignment 250, and a steering adjustment whose price I didn't catch because I already knew my answer.

Good call, I'd call Henderson's from my post above for a quote, to get the real truth.  I have a Safe T Pus on my FT.  Not a complicated item to install.  They also now offer an adjustable while driving feature, which makes adjustment after install simple.

Just an FYI, if you are going through or near the Atlanta area, Safe T Plus is on the west side. They will make an appointment and install for the cost of the unit. Mine was installed, road tested and adjusted in a couple of hours. Might be worth doing while enroute to the Gulf or to Florida in general. A nearby county park with full hookups and pull throughs makes it a snap.

I would consider the Blue Ox, but seems they do not make one for my 1995 U-320?  May eventually go with the Safe-T-Plus?
