Title: Cumming 350 Push rod bent
Post by: bobnitareg on July 07, 2010, 02:16:02 pm
Anyone experience push rod problem being bent?  Have only 41,000 miles.  Maintenance kept up.  Engine light came on, black smoke, no power.

Tell us more.  How did you find it was a bent push rod?

After we broke down, Good Sam towed us in to a Freightliner Service.  They removed the valve cover and the wishbone on valve 2 was off the side.  They put it back on and checked all the valves.  Drove 323 miles and broke down again, to another Freightliner Service and they pulled the cover, same valve and looked deeper and found the bent rod.

Bob, I would guess your Cummins C Series engine would have a problem with cam and lifter.  Usually when the lifter starts breaking up (Flat tappet type) the valve sounds loose as the lash increases, then some one had the lash adjusted.  Then the bent push rod shows up.
Would not be the first time this happened to the  C series, the newer engines have roller lifters.
If it happened to me, I would have a Cummins owned shop look at it.
Hope all goes well.

Thank you very much for your input.  That is exactly what has been determined by rhe repair shop.  The parts are to be here Tuesday.  Our engine only has 41000 miles on it and we are very disappointed with the engine.
