Title: Flooring questions
Post by: Gayland Baasch on July 19, 2010, 09:30:43 pm
Looks like this forum needs some action.  I gotta get my mechanicals all working first, but not to soon to start thinking about the upgrades.  My carpet has to go.  What is the floor under it?  Is a new wood floor going to have to be glued down, or can it be screwed down.

Gayland, i can see a small part of my floor where i replaced the Micro -phor toilet with a Concerto. It appears to me to be marine grade plywood. I would think if yours is in good shape you could do either.

Our wood floor is Pergo-type and is floating.  So there is a third fastening choice.

That on first glance appears to be the best option.  I've just discovered cork, need to look into it more.  Anybody have any experience?

We put down a product called dura-ceramic.  DW loves its...looks great and easy to clean..We "borrowed" the idea from Brett Wolf.  Will post pictures if you are interested..(and I can learn how to do it)

Well, in the interest of you learning more, I would love to see pictures.  I do have an aversion to grout lines, but I see it can be done without.  At this point, my mind is a blank slate (no comments from the peanut section please!)  Did you have to do an underlayment?

As an aside question, what is a DW?  I see lots of people on this site have one.  Is it like a CPO (Chief Procurement Officer?)

I was a CPO in my previous life, but not a DW...I leave that to my Dear Wife, Beth.

I've got Bruce hardwood in my '94.  Was already there when I got it.  Looks like a professional job.  Runs thru the whole coach.  Except the doghouse and front which is still carpeted.  DW is very happy with the hardwood.  Did not like the carpet we had in the Allegro.  She says much easier to sweep than it is to vacuum.

Removed carpet in front area (except doghouse area) and put in floating Pergo type laminated flooring with thin 3/32 foam underlayment from Lumber liquidators. Also took out carpet in bath area and installed loose laid vinal sheet goods. Very easy to sweep clean.

I thought all three photo's would come out. Now I've got it.

By the way, I removed the J-couch to install the floor.

Here are two views of the DuraCeramic.  Laid on the diagonal in the coach WITH grout, and without grout on the steps for easier cleaning.  The hard part is removing the old floor ... worth every penny we paid to have the experts at Foretravel do it.  when they removed the existing wood laminate that the last owners had installed, they found that the soundproofing had been removed!  having the job done correctly has made a huge difference.  It is a CINCH to clean!

When tile is laid without grout, what goes between each piece of tile. Inquiring minds want to know.

Good question George, and also, how is the grout doing.  I've never seen grout that wasn't stained, faded, dirty, etc.  but I've "heard" that the stuff they use here won't do that. ?

Grout was sealed twice at FOT...many miles and hard use still looks new....

You can butt tile together or use grout....Personally, I like the grout...but steps look great too..

Jeff - did you install the vinyl ceramic type stuff or the regular clay tiles?

Vinyl ceramic. Weight was a consideration, as was labor. Can't tell the difference.  Brett Wolfe did his coach himself.  Glad we didn't as underlayment need major attention..

Each color version of the Dura Ceramic comes with recommendations for coordinating grout color. The grout lines in the main body of the coach are pretty narrow, maybe 1/4 inch.  They do not get ugly dirty, as they might in a home installation, where the grout lines may be wider and the foot traffic heavy.  I have scrubbed the floor on my hands and knees (once!!) and was pleased to find that my normal routine of damp mopping and sweeping had really not left any "hidden" soil!  We are not finnicky about removing our shoes the instant we step on board, but we do not have pets bringing mud inside, either.  DH does a fine job with the muddy feet, don't need a dog.  We have had a heavy juicer vibrate off the counter onto the floor(nasty piece of almost off-roading) with no damage to the tile or the grout.  DH hollered,"Oh, my tile!", I hollered "Oh, my juicer!" but both were intact.  Very easy to clean and much lighter in weight than traditional ceramic tile.  We are well pleased.
