Title: over air antenna
Post by: Mitch Dunn on September 06, 2010, 10:30:20 am
I am thinking about installing an over the air antenna on my motorhome port. Can I connect to the cable inlet in the service bay, or is that strictly for cable ?
                                            thanks, Mitch Dunn

Yes you can. The cable will take any input.

Mitch, welcome.

Maybe I have misunderstood but don't you have an over/air Winegard antenna on the roof?

I have done quite a bit of modifying to my TV system and the Winegard amplifier/distribution box so if you need any more info, let me know. I presume the 93, U300 is similar to my 93, U225.

  Hey Kent
yeah I do, but the roof won't allow me to raise it and the port is partially enclosed on three sides so I doubt if I would get reception Thru the metal if I could.
                                          thanks Mitch

You don't have to raise the Winegard antenna for it to work, but it will work much better if it is raised to get it away from the metal frame in the MH roof.  Plus it can only be aimed at the stations when fully raised.  A TV signal is a TV signal whether it comes from an antenna or a cable, except that now all over the air is digital.  Basic cable is still the old analog.  New flat screen TV's have both digital and analog tuners so that they can receive cable and broadcast signals.  Most overair HD signals are now better than what you get on basic cable (about the same for HD cable).  You will need a TV with a digital tuner (flat screen TV) or a digital to analog converter box for an old tube type TV for over air reception.  If your motorhome port is metal, you most likely will need an outside antenna.  With an outside antenna plugged into the cable TV port you will still have to select cable on the distribution box.  Mitch you probably know most of this but maybe it will help someone.
