Title: How full is full?
Post by: George Stoltz on September 21, 2010, 09:55:59 am
Each time we fill our fuel tank I wonder if I should continue to pump fuel after the automatic shut off.  What do you do?

I did that at the last fill-up and found I had a leaking fuel cap on the drivers side. Replaced both - NAPA has them - for about $6.50 each.

In order to get my "drivers Information Center' to show 100% full I need to tip the coach and that allows me to add 10 - 15 gallons more after it auto stops. That way I feel I am always starting at the same point when calculating my mpg.
Make sure your fuel caps don't leak.

In the days before VMSpc and drivers information center, I filled till the fuel was as near level with the bottom of the fill spout as I could see and after foaming ceased. This was difficult to see sometimes especially if I was standing in dark shade. Sometimes I got a flashlight. This was my best attempt at gauging mpg. I still do it this way, I am far to lazy to tilt the coach. After I started using the VMSpc, I did not program and enter the data for "gallons to go". I guess I have finally left the ranks of 100% obsessive-compulsive. I even trust my dash gauge! Not a major problem since I rarely let it go far below half full.

I stop at the first shut off of the pump for every vehicle except the motorcycle. The first shut off is my consistent fill point  Why risk an overflow? On a FT you have over 100 gallons of usable fuel if you get anywhere close to full.

I did not phrase this topic to get the answer I was looking for.  My fault.  I will do a new topic
