Title: Re: Isuzu Diesel Engine Model 3LA1, 3LB1 and 3LD1

I was very fortunate to locate an online copy of the Instruction Manual for the Isuzu Diesel Engine Models 3LA1, 3LB1 and 3LD1 diesel engines.  My diesel engine generator set uses the Isuzu Model 3LB1 engine.  Here is a link to the manual for anyone that does not have it.

I've also bought Baldwin filters from Filterbarn, and they are fine too.  I would never use Fram filters, except maybe on a push lawn mower :)).

Do make sure that whatever filters you get are all metal.  Had a Fleet Guard fuel filter (spin-on) installed on our generator that was all plastic, and it failed dramatically about 3 months after installation, with several gallons of fuel on the ground before I noticed - probably was overtightened, and the threads failed.  Now I know :'(.

Do you have the Isuzu diesel model 3LB1 on your generator set by any chance?  If you do, what fuel filter part number do you use?

I do have an Isuzu motor on our generator and use the NAPA 3386 when I've changed it myself.  If I were the one changing it, I might be comfortable using the plastic spin-ons (and have heard others say they are OK), but I'm not willing to trust that someone else put it on and didn't over-tighten it after I had that that disastrous spill.  The shop that put it on was Massey Diesel in Phoenix, and they are a great shop with a great reputation, and I've had nothing but good experiences with them (up til this one), so I'm assuming that it's easy to get the plastic filters overtightened even by good people.

Morris,
Thanks for posting that!  A great help for those of us who do their own maintenance!  I just learned from the manual that the valve clearance should be checked and adjusted every 1000 hrs, and I'm sure that ours has never been done, so another task to add to the list, and doesn't look very hard.  Also the recommended oil change schedule from the manual is every 250 hrs,  so every 200 (from the FT schedule) should be conservative.

You are very welcome!!  I felt like I had hit the jackpot when I finally found that manual online.  I understood that apparently others did not have the Isuzu manual either. So I was so glad to find it.  Now to find one for the generator unit .....
