Title: Campgrounds around Nac
Post by: Rick & Colleen on October 15, 2010, 03:52:38 pm
We will be in Nac for the ladies driving course Nov. 9 to the 12.  We are thinking of going to a campground within a one to two hour radius from Nac. after the course.  Any suggestions?

Rick & Colleen,

Some folks have stayed at Rayburn Lake south & east of Nacogdoches.  I attached a link to give you and idea if it may a place you'd like to stay at.  There are private campgrounds available as well, but you may have to do another search on Google to find some.

We attended the Ladies Driving School last year.  We drove to Nac to attend the school and "just look" at coaches, but ended up buying our '03 that week (our first motorhome after just selling the Airstream TT).

We stayed right there at FOT, in the new coach, of course!  It was quite nice to be parked with the participants, especially for the impromptu ladies Happy Hour after class with some of the participants who drove in the same assigned coach (there were 4 or 5 of us per coach, as I recall).  Those white knuckles we acquired while gripping the wheel just seemed to disappear when gripping a wine glass!  :))

If you haven't stayed there before, it's very convenient - full hookups, wi-fi, laundry facility (if you don't have a W/D)... all right there.  And with the coaches of all the participants, it was more like a mini-rally actually.

Of course, if you all would prefer to be at a campground... that's fine.  But I highly recommend "Camp Foretravel" (the price is right, too!  ;) )

About an hour north is Shallow Creek RV Resort.  We've stayed there and it's pretty nice.  Not super-fancy.

Also in that general area is a new park that's had some very good recent reviews.  Haven't stayed there ourselves.

We like to research (and provide feedback for) parks at

There is also Twin Dikes (also a part of Sam Rayburn) COE Park.  Full hookups on a beautiful lake.  That is 51 miles from Nac.  Hanks Creek (Sam Rayburn) is only 27 miles away and but does not have full hookups (just water and elec) but the dump is very convenient to use.  It is a really pretty park, but unless you have a satellite dish for internet, your wireless/router won't work there which we found frustrating.

FOT BTW doesn't have full hookups, but they do provide water and elec and a place to dump in the parking lot.

When we were there, we stayed at Camp Tonkawa Springs RV park - Garrison, TX.  About 30 min from NAC and quiet.  A little funky, but was cheap.  We stayed there in a Poretravel...

Just a "heads up" about Camp Tonkawa Springs RV park - Garrison, TX.  Besides being a bit "funky" we were to stay there 2 nights last year and got a bad electrical hookup which fried out 50 to 30 plug. :o with a spike in the current.  But we got off lucky and didn't do any harm to the coach electrical.  We left early because of it.  But the very friendly deer that eat out of your hand were quite charming.  :D
