I am at Camp FT, just returned from Xtreme where their graphics man wound up with a general drawing of my coach with new paint scheme.
Also paint roof, do new tail lights etc.
Problem is the "concave" issue on front of slide where the rubber badder pushes it in about 3/8" inch.
My problem is having the repair on the slide where it will last for many years. If it needs repaired ever five or so years, I have little enthusiasm for nice paint upgrade.
Has anyone seen the "concave" on the side from the badder pressure ?
Thanks
Dave
Dave,
Based only on your description and on our experience with slide wall delamination, I'd say that some of the insulation under the fiberglass skin has become compressed. But, whatever the cause, you won't know until the slide wall is opened, the problem found and fixed.
I can't think of any place more qualified to take this step than Xtreme. Rance Ruthstrom opened both of the short side walls on our slide room and fixed the problem. We are happy with those repairs and the subsequent paint job.
Next time you are here, knock on the door and say hello.
BTW - nice design.
George, Thanks for the input, and yes did chat with Rance briefly. What I am hoping for it a proper fix that is for ever :).
After looking at it this evening, I think the red should be brighter, and the upper part, a brighter shade. Not wanting such a dark overall color. It does look darker on the screen here than it does on his display, so who knows.
And Yes, I agree, watched one artest doing his thing, real patients.
Dave
Dave,
Hopefully John Sichenze will chime in with his delamination experience - he has some great photos of the repair process at Xtreme. Some are in his photo album here, but I he and Linda had e-mailed us a bunch more back when the repair was done. I think the primary cause of the delam was incompatible materials between adhesive and insulation, and I would think James at Xtreme has that concern resolved with his repair.
Love the design! If it helps you visualize the red color better, our coach has M 8021 A - Medium Red as the red detail in the paint job (same as what Xtreme has in yours). It also looks darker on the design sheet than on our coach (the previous owner was kind enough to give us the order sheets when we bought the coach). For reference, the lower color on our coach is a medium charcoal.

Michelle
Dave, yes the delam is from the mastic they used eating away the insulation underneath. New mastic and clean attachment points and insulation will solve the problem.
I have seen your issue on most of the 99-01 model years I have seen with a slide out.. Dave West has it on his slide and he left i in Nac to have it fixed then drove home. I understand he is selling his unit so it will be fixed first and then sold. Ouch. It is an issue but it can be fixed. I know mine was done a while ago now and the slide moves in and does not touch the bladder at all any longer. James and MOT did a wonderful job getting it all done up right.
Michele & John, Thanks for info,
Am also having the ladder removed along with cover on the dryer vent, washer/dryer was removed in former life.
Do not have issue with the rubber bladder rubbing during slide movement, it clears nicely and no rubbing sounds.
No need for ladder, besides makes it look like a Winny or whatever.
Dave
I was thinking that I would remove my ladder some time as well. It gives it a cleaner look.
Dave,
We did this during our "Xtreme" upgrades last winter. I'm still in love with the (for us) VAST improvement and I've had more compliments on the "cleaner" look than I can count. We always carry a Little Giant ladder and an aluminum work step anyway. I haven't found the lack of a fixed ladder to be any inconvenience at all, even going topside at least once every month.
Say Hi to James, Jennifer, Greg and crew for us. They are the BEST!
Regards,
Neal
Dave,
I think the color choices shown in your picture are indeed very classy. I think you'll really like the look once the job is complete. It gives the coach a very modern look without the rear ladder, too.
I'm a ladder guy. I don't think they detract at all. I also like something solid to hold on to when I am trying to get down from my roof. And as much as I like my Telesteps ladder, it can still slip when I try to use it to get off the roof -- so I don't use it for that.
George,
The access to the fixed ladder, from the roof, was always one of the things that bothered me the most about the original ladder, George.
It always made me take a gulp (of air and blind faith) when I bent over, grabbed those 12 " high, fixed ladder extension loops and swung out over the back of the coach onto a somewhat unsubstantial feeling, lightweight construction, creaking ladder. In fact, if you have ever taken any of the original fixed ladder apart or have repaired any of it, you will recognize immediately why it is not OSHA ANSI A14.2 standard, Type 1A, 300 lbs, industrial use RATED.
Now, I extend the VERY substantial feeling Little Giant ladder (padded with the same sealing strip material that you used on your refer door) more than four (4) feet ABOVE the roof-line. I have a permanent bungee cord affixed to the ladder, which, on the first upward bound pass, I clip solidly around the roof rack rail . The well anchored Little Giant, at chest level, feels and acts much more stable than the original fixed ladder when entering the ladder from the roof. The Little Giant takes up a 4"wide X 4'long X 20"high volume in the storage bay, but I sure like its substantial design (300#, Type 1A) and comfort of use factor (the folding aluminum platform step is Type 1A, 300# rated, also). When I'm washing the day's bugs off the bow, the guys that gather around invariably say, "Tell me more about that Foretravel and, BTW, where'd you get that ladder?" "I don't know which I admire more!" "Maybe I could afford the ladder!"
Perhaps not for everyone but worth the consideration of some.
Neal
Neal,
The Little Giant ladder is a very good ladder, but a little too much weight for me to handle. At 165 pounds (me) I don't mind climbing up and down the factory installed ladder on our coach. Some of us like vanilla ice cream and others prefer Moose Tracks.
George,
And I like BOTH (vanilla ice cream and Moose Tracks) and Knob Creek and Johnny Walker Black and 'Down Under Rita's and ..................................
Neal
Dave,
I found there is no alternative to the test panel Xtreme sends you with your actual color scheme. It took two tries before Richard and I were on the same path color wise. Don't make a final decision just based on computer graphics, or even paper copies.
Agree on ladders! I'm up there frequently - to clean solar panels, tilt them when boondocking in the desert, taking photos (great to put a tripod up on the roof and pretend I'm Ansel Adams...). In a much younger life, I did a lot of technical rock climbing, so I could be comfortable with just handholds on the back of the rig (hard to carry tools, though.)
The coach is now at Xtreme, left it there on Nov1, and we went over everything with James and Rance, signed the papers, did the deposit thing, now wait for the 4 week period.
Liked the color scheme George S. has, so mine will be about the same color, just different layout.
The attached should give general idea.
Remove ladder, add LED tail lights and roof paint etc.
Now for the prayer session to begin for the right turn out.
Dave
Very Nice Dave,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Very NICE!!!!
Mike
Nice - I thinks my fav is always the green 'Phenix' design - he's done a couple of those. Just awesome. (Jim and Sim's coach and Phils 36 footer...)
Very nice
Dave H, you would laugh if you knew the agony I went through over the 07 Green Phenix at FoT, if it were not a consignment coach,I would be driving it instead of the paint job.
Dave
Lots of people tell us they like our paint scheme the best, but I am with
Dave Head on his opinion of Jim and Sim's coach. It was the first FPB Foretravel I saw and it was (is) a real beauty. I wonder who owns that coach now?
Dave,
When you pick up your coach you will be so glad you didn't by the green '07 Phenix. It's still not to late to go with the green color scheme and design that Dave Head mentioned. I'm sure James would be glad to e-mail photos to you.
Funny how color makes or breaks a deal. I am told one of the two reasons that 07 Phenix has not sold is due to only one slide and other is the green paint. Seems green is not a highly desireable color for motor homes. Beats Me, as I do like the color :))
Dave
I looked up that '07 Phenix for sale at FOT. Wow. it's a beauty. Not for me, though. It would be good for a full timer. All electric with six...count them...six house batteries. That's a lot of $$$ every 4 to six years. Nonetheless, it still is a great coach for someone out there with lots of bucks to spare. If so, then getting another paint job to suit is only another $20 grand...peanuts for this type owner... 8)
I would call that teal or turquoise. Its a love or hate color. The interior is outstanding and its very liveable. I'm certain the '07 was not IFS, and that may very well be prior to the redesign of the chassis. Greg Amys spoke at the TN Grandvention on how the Unicoach frame had never really been designed for slides and multiple slides really stressed it. The 'Travelride' chassis was a big improvement, must stronger and stiffer.
Love the updated design with the lighter colors, Dave - y'all did a fantastic job! Perhaps you need to swing by MCD for new blinds afterwards and we can stop by and see it in person (we're just an hour southwest of MCD).
Michelle
Michelle,
Dave is going to think that we are trying to spend his money. I talked him into replacing the old mud flap with a new one holding the Foretravel name in stainless steel. Hey, that's what friends are for.
With that new FBP and tail lights, anything less would be uncivilized ;)
-M
Actually been wondering about the "Xtreme" logo on the flap instead of the "Foretravel" . Had seen that on one of the photos some where, any opinions of that for a Mudflap ?
Dave
Talk to James - he had it made up for his personal coach
Believe they are made here in Nacogdoches. If you look close the flap is almost on the ground at level. Traveling height caused a problem with both the flap and the logo. When we had James replace flap and the Foretravel logo he cut between 4-6 off top of the flap.. Will post picture soon.
Interesting that it appears to have only 1 dump valve handle - single waste tank?
-M
Michelle,
You silly girl! Don't you know that folks with that much money dont' defecate smelly stuff? I believe it's usually green and smells like the US Treasury building in DC as well. So why put in all the additional weight of a separate tank? This way, the folks can carry even more $$$... :o
I've got three - Oh my!!!~
Ooooh - look who just make the Xtreme "work in progress" page!
http://www.xtremegraphics.net/workin.html (http://www.xtremegraphics.net/workin.html)
Michelle
gonna be awesome!!!
I am back at Xtreme, coach looking good, more as it unfolds.
Pix of front before the sanding, Sanding on side is under way.
Today the final clear coat, what a job to get it this far, these guys are for sure experts or James would not have the working here.
Looks beautiful Dave......I bet you are fired up to see it completed.
Thursday 2nd, looks like I will be over the weekend, it is going well but there is so much detail.
Thought send nother pix, it is getting sooo smooth like glass, just amazing and still not done.
Really looks amazing, Dave; how many "steps" are there in the painting-process?
Chad, There are so many steps in this process, I would not venture a guess, but over 1000 I am sure. Heck they replace the a/c covers, roof vents for refrig etc. all included in the base price as they normally need replaced.
Was hoping to depart here Friday, but now I am guessing Tuesday, still have the slide w/graphics and door latches (all 11), and many other little items, the total time on this coach is a lot more than I would have ever guessed. Still have wipers, antennas, satellite dome, refrig cover (new also) and I am sure I wikll recall some more later tonight. Point is, there is still a lot of work to be done yet.
The funny is, some one broght an old Blue Bird in for full going over, what a mess, paint flaking off with lots of rust behind it, in general it looks like a real bow wow (dog).
Makes me feel real good :))
I now feel the $21,500.00 + tax + is not out of line for this job on my 36 ft.
I find the more I learn, the happier I am concerning this Xtreme work, today I find the paint is made in Germany, called Glasurit, for info on it go to www.basferfinish.com (http://www.basfrefinish.com)
Am told that waxing it is not needed, you can was it but it is sure not needed, and will not add any advantage to the paint job. If you get road tar splattered on it, use kerosene, gasoline or tar remover to wipe it off, it will not hurt the finish. Amazing!
Can not get over the glass finish.
Wow! Simply put - Wow!
Pretty sharp looking for a "man cave" ;)
Michelle
BASF - no wonder! Top quality company no matter what they produce.
Thought, would post the final paint shots from outside at Xtreme shop.
Now all lights are LED, added 2 dditional running / turn lights at rear wheels, HID Xenon low beam, LED front turn etc.
Nearly ready to depart once they figure out the remote door lock system, when removed the door, cut all the wires and now a little mystrey to make it work.
Plus between the local tire shop and Pressure Pro sensor, I have a flat tire off the bead, so now need road service to get it put back to see where the leak is. WONDERFUL
Ya'll smile :)
A real beauty, Dave. WOW!
Sorry to hear about the flat tire. Just a little bump in the road.
Looks great! A fine Christmas present ;D
Very NICE!! I bet you are really happy with it....
Hope the tire issue is minor....
Enjoy the "new" coach......
Oh man, Dave...That's so gorgeous. I would be paranoid with bugs and tiny pebbles getting on the new front paint. Did you have a "mask" added to the front?
Xtremely Sweet!!!
Dave,
The Coach looks great ;D and I hope you got to leave today, but if you are staying tomorrow you get a free lunch at FOT while perusing the IH 45. It was great meeting you today and will send you the link for the LED's. I sure wish I had your lights for the drive home today! Just got to the hill country when it got dark :(, but then I thought if I hit a deer maybe new lights in the front.
Safe Travels,
Most triumphantly Beautiful Dave. Merry Christmas early....
Finally out of Xtreme shop, here are two shots of the new 01 320 36'
Dave,
It's absolutely gorgeous; a NEW, nine year old coach!
Dave,
Beautiful! Gives me a good idea what my 2000 36' U320 might look like with a FBP from Xtreme.
Enjoy!
Paul
36' 2000 U320
Sweet! Love the touch of red!
Michelle
Dave,
As Larry (the cable guy) would say, "Now that is some kind of FINE.............I don't care who you are!!"
Beautiful! Just right!
Neal
Felt it might be the time to mention all the steps involved in this Full Body Paint job. I first thought the price was way high, but after finding out what is involved in the job, I started to see why the job is priced as it is.
First, I think all the plastic parts,PVC or what ever material is used, it is not suitable for painting, so new parts are included that can be painted, lots of them. Then you find the paint is the Glasurit by BASF (German paint), and the attention to all details of paint and finish, masking off the different designs, painting, sanding down, clear coat multiple layers unknown. Oh yes, everything is removed, windows, all attachments, awnings and hardware, antennas, horns, entrance door for new rubber seal gasket, on & on & on. I now see why they figure a month for the job, this is not a paint job using a mop. (My style).
Bottom line I now have all LED lights except the headlights and the low fog lights, low bean is now the HID Xenon, WOW about covers that.
Now I hope I do not total it.
Been an education and I have enjoyed it.
Must say the Xtreme group is way above average and the finished job shows it.
Add 2 more shots of it, front end.
Thanks for going through this with me.
Dave
Peter,
I think that James is getting away from using the 3M paint mask. If I am wrong, someone will let me know. We were at Xtreme twice this year and both times someone had a coach in for removal of the paint mask that had failed.
Jeez, no mask, not sticky anything, just paint and art work, I truly believe Xtreme can do any kind of painting, including air brush pictures, their capability is truly amazing.
You need to visit their web site http://www.xtremegraphics.net/foretravel.html (http://www.xtremegraphics.net/foretravel.html)
look it over goooood, there is a lot to see and understand there including his Xtreme Marine Division.
Xtreme paint was very helpful in assisting me with info on how to remove my 3M the coach looks new. It took time, patience, and a lot of elbow grease.
Actually, Dave, it's we who owe you thanks for sharing the process here on the forum. One hears about how great the FBP and head/tail light conversions are, but getting to "watch" and read about your coach going through the process a member can see for themselves what's involved.
Michelle
Dave, you might increase the desirability of the older coaches with this thread. It is amazing what Xtreme can do and the way the coach looks after it is done. You have a lovely coach and I can not wait to see it in person.
John, Yes the Xtreme job sure changed the overall looks of the coach, I must admit that I very nearly came away from Nac with that Green Phenix 07 with the ISX, the big hold up was the consignment issue, if Foretravel owned it, I am fairly certain I would be driving it now.
I have no plans on upgrading at this time as the 01 is still one of the better units on the road I feel.
Everything is in good order and I feel very comfy with the dependability of all the systems.
A funny, I ran across the chap that owned my coach prior to my purchase, he was at MOT when they were correcting the electric lock system, found he also kept my coach in a garage.
Am thinking about the rear door conversion plus the air intake on the side this spring, hope Rance feels more comfy about it as he has some concerns.
Lots of fun.
I expect to be through your Wal-Mart again in mid Fed on way to Harrisburg Pa for the Motor Rams show again.
Ok on the the walmart. I will see the coach then and we can have dinner. You can even hook up in the back yard if you wish....
