Merry Christmas to All,
We were enjoying the pleasant weather down here in the Rio Grande Valley this afternoon, when, out of the blue, our front air-conditioner came on with the switch in the OFF position! We tried several things, among which was turning the on-off switch on then off again. The blower shut off for about 5-10 seconds, during which we heard a couple low-pitched tones (couldn't tell whether it was from the circuit board in the thermostat or from the A/C unit) and darned if the A/C didn't come on again.
I pulled the thermostat/controller off the wall, only to find that a wide band/ribbon cable of wires extend from the circuit board into the wall. I pulled on the ribbon until it wouldn't come any further, hoping that the cable of wires would plug into a cable going to the roof A/C circuit board and I could unplug it. No such luck. The end attached to the thermostat appears to be soldered into the board.
As a last resort, I hit the main circuit breaker for the front A/C and got it turned off. Fortunately it hasn't been real hot, though in the low 80's.
This is an old, non-digital thermostat, with a lever to increase/decrease the temp. I am told they aren't made any longer.
Any suggestions from the group?
I had this happen on my 93 - it wasn't the thermostat. The fan relay on the roof went bad and the contacts stuck. In case you need one, I have a spare. Its a Potter and Broomfield T9AS1D22-24 potted relay. There were two - one for the heat strip (which my 93 didn't even have) and one for the fan. They are soldered to the board. Not a hard job. Relays are cheap and commonly avail. I just swapped the relays at the time which is why I have a spare...
Don, I can't find it right this minute but I sent my thermostat to a guy named William Hendrix in CO to be rebuilt. Do a search here and I believe that I posted his name and number.
Mr Hendrix still rebuilds them & can be contacted at whendrix@aol.com
"Yes, I rebuild Dometic / DuoTherm thermostats and I can also provide upgrade kits to the current 5 button style with instructions."
"We travel so it is best you contact me by email before sending -- some times it is not the thermostat
but my present address is 370 Baker Lane, Erie, CO 80516
Regards, William Hendrix"
