Title: Propane filling problems
Post by: MAZ on February 19, 2011, 01:31:31 pm
Hello everyone,
I just got back from a trip to the keys. While in route I decided to top off the propane because I was going to be dry camping for the first time down in the keys. I had flying J try to fill it in the Port St Lucie station. They were not able to get any propane to flow into the tank. I also had the mobile propane guy in the keys try to fill it and he had the same problem. He was able to manually depress the valve and discharge some propane but still not able to fill it. Anyone have any similar problems like this?

Regards, Mark

Is the rubber gasket in the fill fitting still there? I had mine fall out once and you can't get a solid fit without it. Propane leaks from the fitting.

Eric,
Thanks. I will check tomorrow. I don't remember any leaks when they were filling it.

I had my tank filled at one location and the gasket was lost in the process.  The next time I needed a fill I went through the same process you are now going through.  Replaced the gasket and all was well.

Thanks for the input. I just checked my valve and the rubber seal is present.

Lets see, I know all about pumping off loads of gasoline, diesel fuel, bunker oil, very hot (300 degree hot) asphalt, but alas, nothing about propane :-X.  And I have had my own problems in that area :o.  On my first Class C, there was a pressure type valve that had to be pushed in for the propane to be pumped into the tank.  It was on the bottom of the valve housing and the attendant had to hold that button up with a small crow bar.  On my first Class A, they had to turn a vent valve to start the filling.  And that sounds like a leak would!  I've found that GOOD RV shops know more about our ASME propane tank operations than even Propane delivery drivers >:D!

Thanks for the input. I have a local RV shop nearby. I can stop and ask them for advise this week.
