Title: New curtains
Post by: Wattalife54 on February 26, 2011, 06:04:47 pm
Does anyone have suggestions on affordable replacement curtains for the bedroom?  Ours are worn out and need to be freshed up.  Thanks!
Faith

Are you asking about fabric curtains or the day/night shades.  If the latter, we highly recommend MCD shades MCD Innovations (http://www.mcdinnovations.com)  They are probably the most popular replacement for day/night shades; and, are standard in new Foretravels.  If you choose to have them installed, you can reduce labor costs by removing the old shades and the valences yourself, then replacing the valences yourself.  See Jeff & Carol Savournin's blog to see how they did it.

While I agree with Jeff & Suzanne about MCD shades, they are also the most expensive options out there.  Basically, you are covering windows.  There are other products available, but I am sorry I do not know who makes them.

Thanks everyone,
We have the see through shade on the windows in the bedroom so we need to replace the curtains.  I tried washing them and they shrank!!  I will call FT to see if I can get the material still but I doubt it as they are original.  If not, I guess we will have to live with shrunken curtains.    Faith

Our bedroom curtains are just home type traverse drapes. You can find replacements or have them made at any place that makes drapes. Request light proof linings. MCD shades do not need curtains to make the room dark and work MUCH better than day-night shades.

You can use any insulated type drapes.  JC Penneys, Sears, etc.  A seamstress who can alter them to the proper length, if you do not sew, is easy to find.  They may not match your spread or bed skirt, but you can just coordinate a fabric and use the extra to make a throw pillow or two.  Even if Foretravel still has a remnant of the fabric, it would not be a match after all that time, I'm thinking.

I will check on the MCD shades.  I'm sure they keep the light out better than curtains do.  How do you clean them??  Faith :))

I may be mistaken, but when I was contemplating blinds in our old girls bedroom, someone pointed out that day/night type blinds would not allow a breeze through as well as curtains. Maybe I'm wron, but that was the reason we still have curtains in our bedroom and day/nights in the rest of the coach. Just sayin...cause I'd hat to not find that out until I had made the purchase and then be disapointed if you enjoyed the breeze :)

MCD Innovations (http://www.mcdinnovations.com/)

They make our bedroom DARK.  Not a difficult installation. They also have overnite facilities.

Carl,

Your assumption is correct.  The room darkening shade made by MCD does not allow air to pass through it.

Thanks Steve
I didn't even think of that possibility.  Since we are usually up before the roosters, I would rather have the breeze then the darkness.  Who would think replacing curtains would be such a thought provoking subject :))  Faith

You are correct that curtains/drapes allow a breeze through an open bedroom window. And that a closed MCD will not allow a breeze to flow. We have both drapes and MCD-Duo in our bedroom.

We have modified our traverse drapes to open from the rear-most end. We can slide our drapes forward to match our window opening with complete privacy when cabinet door is open.
We have all the air flow we want. Installing Window-Maxx allows us to open our windows when it is raining outside. Running our kitchen ceiling exhaust fan will suck air in. So we will always have drapes.

Thanks Barry and Cindy
The window maxx looks like a nice little gaget to have.  Looks like I have my homework cut out for me:)

I had the Maxx air window vents on my SOB and liked them.  The only con was that they are hard to clean on the inside.  Anyone contemplating replacing a day/night shade, the black out feature on the night portion of the shade is an option.  If you don't get the black out option  a lot of light will come in with the night part down.

Jeff does not like to have his window open ... I need air in my face and use either a small fan or open the window to get circulation.  I can open the window a bit and either raise just the darkening portion or both the dark and the mesh, depending on how much privacy I need and the strength of the breeze.  If we are using the AC, it is not an issue, of course.  I love the blinds.  To clean them, all you need to do is brush or vacuum, like any other roller blind.

I think I ask Steve daily "Have I told you how much I love these blinds?"  ;D

I can attest that dog slobber on the vinyl MCD night blind cleans up with a damp paper towel  ::)  I could not get it off the original day/night pleated shades.

In our "house" the politically correct term for dog slobber is dogie kisses :).
