Title: VDO Gauge Repair
Post by: sgkarnes on March 19, 2011, 05:39:34 pm
Hello All;
  For those of us that need to have our VDO gauges repaired or replaced try Lauderdale Speedometer and Compass (http://www.lspeedo.com)
Also if you look at their catalog the back pages have a lot of information on how gauges work. They are also fast and reasonable.
Disclaimer, I have no interest or gain, just took a long time to find a good repair shop.
Attn.Steve; move this to a better place in the forum and I think Barry Beam has added this to his FT encyclopedia.

Gary,  Thank you for this post.  My VDO tachometer quit working a while back and I expected I would just have to buy a new one.  I may now send it off to be repaired.

I wonder if I am the only one who has a tach or speedometer quit?

Nope. My fuel gauge went, too.
I rely on my VMS 240 CL for all I need to know.

best, paul

I went thru two of them on my last two coaches.  One on my 99 and then a new one on my 2000  so far my 2001 is running fine.

I also replaced the tachometer in my 1999, U 320, twice!
Very happy to know that there is a repair facility, wonder if it is cheaper than replacement?

I have used North Hollywood Speedometer & Clock at: North Hollywood Speedometer and Clock Company. Serving your gauge needs since (http://www.nhspeedometer.com/) with excellent results. They replaced the faces on all my gray market euro import speedometers in the 70's and 80's (sometime a dozen a month) and also an occasional gear change (for different rear axle ratio). They are the oldest VDO distributor in the U.S.

Gary - Do you mind providing a quote on your repairs and what you had performed?

Ron;
    I have had intermittent odometer readings. The LCD display was dim or not on at all but had the correct readings as I monitored mileage with GPS and VMSPC. It finally quit on the way home after four months in the south and west. I am selling my coach and I wanted it to work AND show the CORRECT mileage.
    I had called a lot of gauge people and I was quoted around $300 to "repair" the problem. The repair was often replacement with an upcharge to put in the correct mileage along with a disclaimer as to the mileage. The speedo is around $125 for a new one.
    My research led me to these folks. They fixed it the same day they got it,called me to say the mileage I had calculated was within 3 miles of what the chip in the odometer had. The repair was $204 with tax/shipping. New display and performance test.
    Call them first as it may be a bad ground, or sending unit.

Thanks Gary... I'm experiencing the same symptoms with my speedo w/ odometer and Tach w/ eng hours.  I keep tracking last readings and waiting for the ultimate failure.

I'll ditto Ron, intermittently the odometer and/or eng hours go baloey, then a few days or weeks later they are fine.  I record both them and the VMSPC values for my log.
