Title: Check Engine Light
Post by: BobW on March 27, 2011, 02:15:22 pm
We have been staying on our RV lot  in Mission, TX since October. When I started the engine for the first time in five months, the check engine warning light and alarm came on and stayed steady in yellow.  The engine hesitated before starting. I only used our two Red Tops to start. They have been trickle charging on a BatteryMinder since our arrival. We arrived here two days after having our punch list completed at FOT. While there, I also had them change the oil and filter.  I vaguely recall having the check engine light come the day after we left FOT. Then, I shut the engine off and successfully restarted it. It restarted this morning without the yellow check engine light coming on. I completed the motorhome and generator exercise without a problem. We start a 2500 mile trip in May. What should the action plan be for this diesel challenged RVer?  Thanks

It sounds as though the hesitation knocked the power down to the ECM and it threw the light. It was an issue I had on my coach but put in a second cable and ground to the starter and it stopped..  There is a thread and pictures on this somewhere. I will see if I can find it...  I also had to replace the starter with a new one and that helped out a bunch too.

We had a chronic "check engine" light on our '95 U320 with a 400hp M-11.  Sometimes it would go away after running down the road for a bit, sometimes not.  MOT did the diagnostics and the error code came back as a bad coolant temp sensor.  They cleaned the sensor and replaced it.  Light went off for a time, but then reappeared.  New sensor installed.  Light went away for a time, but then reappeared.  The temp on the dash gauge always read just fine, as did the Silverleaf.  But it is disconcerting to see that message, so we asked MOT to address the issue again.  This time, they replaced the sending unit that the sensor plugs into.  Problem solved.  What I heard ... although I do not know if it is gospel ... is that If the "Stop Engine" message is a steady ON, and all your gauges are good, keep running and just watch closely.  If it is BLINKING at you, get off the highway and shut down.  Dunno ... Others would know better than I if that is true.
