Title: Vinyl Ceiling Suggestions
Post by: Dwayne on April 12, 2011, 09:36:02 am
After I replaced the A/C units, the vinyl covered center trim piece no longer covers some of the exposed gap between the two sides of vinyl (in the bedroom).  The newer units are smaller physically.  I thought about using wood stained to match the woodwork and integrating some LED lighting but the idea of wood overhead might be problematic particularly above the bed.  I took a piece of the two-tone vinyl that is on my ceiling to an upholstery shop and they are unable to match it.  Anything other than the original vinyl will stand out like a sore thumb.  I don't want to redo the entire ceiling. I'm looking for ideas.  Has anyone with an older coach or who once owned an older coach ever do anything novel in replacing the center trim section with something else?  I've seen some of the new rigs with mirrors but that looks expensive.  I considered the mirrored tile but I'd have to drill through it without breaking it.  If anyone has ever worked with putting mirror up there in a remodel I'd like to hear about the experience.  Thanks.

I have the vinyl ceiling in my '89 GV. Previous owner replaced front AC. It was shorter (front to back) and dead center over the seam center piece. They put a white plastic outlet box cover plate that filled the gap.

Another possible alternative: Take a piece from inside one of the cupboards or the closet and patch it in.

Sometimes when you cannot get something to match exactly, try an entirely different color that goes with what you have.  Looks like it was done intentionally instead of a repair.  Maybe stitch a bead around the edge to give it a finished look.

Exactly,  a contrasting material often looks much better than something that looks like you tried to make a match but could not.

When I replaced my TV I could not find a piece of walnut to fit at the top.  So I painted a piece of wood high gloss black to match the new TV.

Looks good.  It is funny you showed me the TV because I decided to use the vinyl from the TV enclosure for a patch in the bedroom around the A/C.  There will be two seams but they should be fairly hard to notice.  I am going to build a box just large enough to hold a DVD player but leave space at the top for the board I'm going to mount a new TV to so that it will stow up and over the top of the box when not in use.  I like Brett Wolfe's idea of getting rid of the TV box but I am hesitant to try to build such an elaborate system and securing that latch to the cab overhead is something I want to avoid attempting.  Here is the hinge that will accomplish this:
