Title: Memphis, TN Campground
Post by: txforetravel on June 09, 2011, 10:06:09 am
Looks like we'll need to be in Memphis off and on this summer for work and wondering if anyone has stayed in the area and if there are any "decent" campgrounds.  The one that is the closest to work is the Agricenter.  I suspect it's not much more than a parking lot.  Does anyone have any first hand experience staying in the area?

Thanks

Friends with a 40' Tiffin stayed at EZ Daze just south of Memphis in Southaven, Mississippi last year and liked it.

Camping: Southaven, DeSoto County, North Mississippi/Memphis, South Tennessee (http://www.ezdazervpark.info/)

Looks "adult" and hey, they have a massage therapist (which might be needed after working all day)!

9 years ago we stayed at Memphis East for an overnight and wouldn't recommend it.

Tom Sawyer's gets consistently high ratings on rvparkreviews.com but it's on the opposite side of Memphis from where you need to be (and I'm not sure how the flooding is affecting them).  Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River RV Park (http://www.tomsawyersrvpark.com/)

"decent" campgrounds." Hands down! Sawyer's over on the west side of the river. A wonderful campground. Right on "Ole Man River", with a view to die for. Listen to the tugs a'coming and a'going. Remember Memphis is a lop sided city, downtown is right across the river, on no other "side" can you get as close as Sawyers. Just hop up on the bridge, maybe 2 miles thru the industrial park and over the bridge to downtown. Stay there, always, when in the vicinity.

I have never stayed at Tom Sawyer, but can't believe that it is not flooded at the moment.  From their website it is located between the levee and the river.  This is what they have to say about floods. Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River RV Park (http://www.tomsawyersrvpark.com/weather.html)

The times we have been in the Memphis area we have stayed at the Casino CG's at Tunica, MS.  These will all be underwater at this time I am sure.

I just checked Hollywood and Sam's Town, and while the hotels and casinos have re-opened, the RV parks (and Riverbend Links golf course) have not and don't look like they will be open for months.

Mid-South at Harrah's, which is further north than main casino drag doesn't say that it's closed.

We stayed in the Tom Sawyer RV park in early March.  We probably saw the park at its worst.  It rained very hard during our stay (as it probably had for weeks).  The sites near the river had a lot of standing water.  Even then the river was high....maybe 6 feet below flood stage for the park.  I read somewhere that the crest of the Mississippi was about 14 feet above flood stage at Memphis at its max.  Not sure what that means for Tom Sawyer's, but I would be very surprised if it was open.

We have stayed in the Memphis East CG several times. It is convenient, depending on where you want to go in Memphis.

It is pretty much a bare-bones campground, but the lots are adequate, they have full hookups with 50-amp sites. It used to be a KOA, but they are now disassociated with KOA.

I have stayed several times at the Agricenter.  Spaces are large.  A few with full hookups.  It is a large field, but we enjoyed it.  Large farmers market and usually something going on in the exhibition halls.

Have also stayed at Tom Sawyer, across the river.  Excellent.  But they probably under 10 feet of water.  Only CG I have ever seen where the laundry room, bathhouse, etc. are on wheels.

Regards to all,
