Title: Transynd Service Intervals

In late 2008 we had our transmission fluid changed to Transynd.  10,000 miles later in late 2010 the dealer we took it to completely drained the transmission, put in new filters and put in new Transynd.

I am not sure if that second step was overkill or not.  But it is what it is.

So, my question is:

When is our next service interval and what gets done?

Allison Transmission (http://www.allisontransmission.com/service/changeinterval/)  You should have the @HD-4060R 6 speed transmission with retarder.  So click on the MotorHome Series4000.  Then plug in all the asked for info.  You willl probably come up with 150,000 miles or 48 months, which ever comes first from that 2010 date/ mileage.  And 75,000 or 36 months, which ever comes first, for the filters.  That is if you are running  TES 295 and have had you first transmission change done and you have been running TES 295 prior to that.

George, In my opinion forget about ever doing anything more to the trans' except keep an eye on level. Unless you drive it real hard and get the oil really hot, keep driving it till you reach 65 !!! ^.^d

        I believe Tom, our resident Allison fluids expert would suggest an oil analysis at or near the recommended interval. For the $25-$30 for the analysis you might save a substantial amount by not having to change it for a while.

What is an analysis of Transynd looking to find?

Chemical breakdown with viscosity change for oil change guidance, plus wear metals for further mechanical investigation.  Based on the time and mileage on the existing oil, the analysis will indicate whether you can go another full interval on it, or plan to change it sooner.

You might want to check with the local dealers for fluid analysis. My local CAT dealer is about $15.00 for coolant and $18.00 for oil.

Hi all,

Thought I'd chime in on this discussion.  I'd sample once per year if you're running TranSynd (or another licensed TES-295 product).  An annual sample will cost you around $20 and it will show you whether or not contamination is an issue.  With TranSynd (or another licensed TES-295 product), you don't generally need to be concerned about oxidation or viscosity change because the specification requires really stable oxidation resistance and viscosity change.  This leaves contamination (water, glycol from a cooler leak, or dust/dirt).

That's the beauty of TranSynd.  It will remain stable probably as long as you have the motorhome unless it gets contaminated.  So, you just need a Basic Oil Analysis Kit that measures metals (wear, contaminant, and additives), viscosity at 100C and contamination from water or glycol (sodium and potassium are used as indicators).

Change the filters in accordance with Allison recommendations and then top off with TranSynd (or another TES-295 licensed product). 

PS:  If you're running something other than TranSynd (or another licensed TES-295 product) such as DEXRON-III or a mixture, then you'll need to also test for oxidation resistance.  This test will measure TAN (Total Acid Number) in "mgKOH/g" (milligrams of Potassium Hydroxide per gram of used transmission fluid sample).  Oxidation, viscosity change and contamination are all concerns with the older transmission fluids or mixtures.

One more thing, lots of folks sell oil analysis kits; so, be sure when you compare pricing that you also compare apples to apples (make sure that all the kits you're pricing offer the same exact tests).

And to think, Kendall Oil (Division of Witco Chemical) in Bradford, Pa use to do oil testing for free.  Maybe that is why Kendall is no longer in business.  Now no one does.
