While taking pics of my converter this evening, I noticed something else I missed. It seems there are about 3-4 screws that have either rusted and popped out of their threads or what they attached to has let go. I tried to take some pics, but it was difficult to show what's really going on. Have any of you older GV owners experienced this? I was thinking about backing out the culprits and then selecting one size larger screws to see if they'll grab and take hold. Any better suggestions on how I might fix this?
my suggestion is take out the old and squeeze into the holes a good glue then put new ones in that are 1/2" longer, and use stainless ones.
Benjie, I had the same problem. It occurred on the driver's side, right above the dump valve compartment. I did just what John suggested. Before I fixed the problem I tried pushing in the siding and the screws(4) caught enough to hold the siding in for a little while so I knew enough to try the longer screws. I "pushed in" some fiberglass body filler in each hole, let it cure for half the curing time, then inserted the longer screws. I also braced/pushed the siding in until I thought the body filler had cured.
Oh, got the stainless screws at our local Fastenal as they are only four blocks away.
Ok, that's kind of what I was planning. I was thinking about using some 5 minute epoxy to squirt into each hole and then screwing longer stainless steel screws in. Can you think of any reason not to use the epoxy vs. the fiberglass body filler? I like the fact that it'll cure while I hold the newly screwed siding in place.
use either/or as they both cure in a short period of time. I just happened to have the body filler on hand.
