Title: Back up camera monitor distrance calibration tip
Post by: Dave Cobb on October 05, 2011, 07:14:46 pm
Our new to us coach has a new large camera monitor, thanks to Kent Speers.  We have added some lines to the screen to help us know the distances showing on the screen.

We used a white pitcher, and a tape measure to set the outside back distances, of 3', 7', 10', 20' and 40'.  On the dash screen we put some drafting tape that is "dash/dot/dash", 1/16" wide, and half as long as the screen is wide.  Dolly made labels for the footage lines and stuck them to the screen.  Now it is easy to back into a parking space using the 3' mark, or to the truck for hook up, or motorcycle trailer hook up.  In addition we know with a glance as we pass some thing, it is a clear 20-40' back and we are good to start back in to the right lane.

We also added a black tape to the "shelf" on the rear to mark the center point for the hitch and know that when backing, the trailer hitch is right on when the coupler just disappears.

Would appreciate a photo of the screen with the marks on it.

I will try grab a screen shot next time in the coach.  Hope my simple description would allow others to do the mod.

Here is a shot of the camera screen.

Showing are the lines and the numbers, the view is of the parking area behind the coach, and it shows the shaded area.  The bay is shadowed and then full sunlight at the 10' mark.  In addition our center line black tape shows, and the trailer ball is just inches out of view.  The 40' mark is the top of the screen view.

Hope this might help someone, sure has helped us when backing or passing traffic.
