I recently had the pleasure of obtaining a 1993 U240. Many questions, one being, do i have a telescoping steering wheel. And if so, how does it work?
Take ahold of the top of the horn housing in the middle of the steering wheel, turn CCW. If it loosens, you have a telescoping wheel and will spring up or down. Turn CW to tighten at the level that's comfortable for you. That's the way mine works in my U280. Don't know if the 240's had them.
My 320 was jammed. Derek at MOT had to take it apart to fix it...
The telescoping wheels can get out of adjustment. To tighten up carefully pry off the Horn button ( center ), then you can tighten up the nut that holds the whole thing together. When prying up the horn button use a thin blade and work it around the edges a little at a time. Probably what is going to happen is that the leather like cover will separate from the metal backing, no big deal, after you get It off just work the cover back on the metal.

Well, now you got me going. ;D Grabbing the keys to see if I have a telescoping wheel in my 91 U225. Would be a nice suprise if that were the case.

I am laughing so hard, I am crying. We had "twin" '93 U225 rigs ... Kent & Peggy Speers and Jeff & me ... and we "discovered" the telescoping feature sitting in the parking lot at FOT while waiting for the buyer for our '93 to arrive from Tucson (we were moving in to a '95). We were astonished ... had known about the tilt feature, but never figured on the telescoping aspect. Kent said,"Are you kidding me?? I have been dealing with this thing hitting my knees for the last 3 years, and wondered why they made their steering wheels so low for guys with long legs!" It was such a Homer Simpson "D'oh!!" moment for us. You are much smarter, if you suspected that the feature even existed. Congratulations!!
And I thought everybody knew this, that it was one of the wonderful advanced featured of the Foretravel. Can't remember how I figured it out, but have known since I got the coach.
smart? not really....curious about so many things on this coach.....steering wheel seems to be stuck in lower position and i do not want to break anything...thanks for your reply to original question...
I discovered my telescoping steering wheel when I pulled into a New Mexico rest area, and as I was coming to a stop and setting the brake, much to my surprise the wheel suddenly jumped up! After a session of messing with the tilt lever, and crawling under the steering column to see what was amiss, I accidentally put my hand on the horn housing and it turned loosely. I turned it CW to screw it down tight and realized I had found the secret!! Will wonders never cease?
