Title: Capture & Save as .pdf file
Post by: Dick S on November 22, 2011, 12:35:34 pm
This is so cool!
I wanted to save the recent discussion on Shell Rotella ELC. In the past I would copy & paste into MS Word and then save as .pdf.
Now, I copy the URL for the Shell topic, open this web page (Convert HTML to PDF online, Web/HTML to PDF API (http://pdfcrowd.com/#convert_by_url)), paste the URL into the box, and click "Convert to PDF".
The result is attached as an example. There is a small ad inserted, but the app is free.
I hope you find this useful.

Hey Dick,

It looks like it came from the mobile theme.

It also indicates a security issue with the latest mobile theme (installed just yesterday) which Steve is going to fix now.  Guests should not be able to view the avatars or the entire post contents, and pdfcrowd.com would be a guest; they should not have access to full site content.

To quote Steve "One man's tool is another man's security hole".  That ability will be going away very quickly.

He'll look to see if he can find another way to give PDF-creation ability that doesn't compromise the site data or bandwidth.

Don't kill the messenger  ;)

Oops! I didn't realize that a guest could make that work. Maybe it's good that we know that and Steve can fix it.

It was good to know, and Steve has now fixed it.  The biggest concern is when someone posts their e-mail address, phone number, or home address on the board.  We only want registered users to see that information.

Security bug aside, for saving a thread, have you tried doing "Print" at the upper right above a topic to create a printable version?  You can do a "text only" or a "with images" version and maybe from there, copy-and-paste into Word would be a little easier.

Thanks Michelle,
That Print function works pretty slick. It offer Text Only, With Images, and Print as PDF. I can't see any difference between Text Only and With Images though, at least not on this topic. Maybe "Images" is confined to attachments?
I guess I'll have to try it on a topic with attached photos.
In any case the Print as PDF option is great.

Argh - you spoiled the surprise  ;)  Print as PDF is a new option as of just 1/2 an hour ago, and is still being tweaked by Steve, real time (especially with regards to images).

The "With Images" will work on attached images (not files) and remote images.  No album images (yet).  To get the Print as PDF first you have to first do a "Text Only" or a "With Images", then select "Print as PDF" (important if you want the version with images).

The advantage of this versus the PDFCrowd method is that Steve's version will get all pages of a multipage topic.  The PDFCrowd one would only get a single page at a time (each page of a topic has its own URL).

Whoa! I may have started with something bad, but you have given us something GOOD!
I just tried a topic with attached photos and it is slick. Photos are large and easy to view. The avitar and signature images are not there and I think I like that as it keeps the PDF file smaller and doesn't really add much to the topic.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Try free CutePDF
CutePDF - The free PDF Converter, Convert to PDF for free, Free PDF Utilities. (http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp)

It installs as a printer and creates a PDF file instead of printing to paper.

Also takes care of the problem when there is something to print, but no printer online.

Another PDF Writer program that I have been using for years is "PDF995" -- pdf 995: create PDF documents easily for free (http://www.pdf995.com/)
You would set it up as a destination printer for any document and it crates a PDF file that you can save &/or print.
