Title: Foretravel Sandwich anyone?... um-um good!
Post by: Don & Tys on November 30, 2011, 09:55:14 pm
As I was browsing my photos looking for something to help with Dick & Sue's Splendide install, I came across this picture which I find quite striking. This Foretravel sandwich resulted from drilling the Dryer vent hole in the side of our U270. I was amazed to see how solid the construction of the side walls of our coach is... I thought I would post this for those who haven't seen this aspect of the way our coaches are built.

What is the thickness of the sandwich? 3 inches?

The markings on that square are hard to see, but the walls are 1 3/4" thick. That plug is from a 4" hole saw.

It really is! I wonder if the 1990s Unihomes are that thick.

Don, thanks for that picture. I just checked my 4" hole saw and that is only 1 3/8" deep. Did you drill from inside and then outside?

When we put the hole in the floor to replace the generator fuel line, we were surprised to find the floor over 1 3/8" thick.
We used 1/8" alum to cover the org hole that over lapped the bottom skin. Then the plug.

Open a window and get out your calipers.

Your welcome Dick! Yes, I drilled about 2/3rds of the way through from the inside, then when the pilot hole was through to the outside, I came back the other way. If you have access to both sides, that is always the best way to go becuase the exit holes aren't as clean as the entry with hole saws. You can see a little ridge about 2/3rds of the way through if you closly at the pic...
I should add that you need to use fairly low speed and strive to maintain perpendicuarity with the coach side wall. If that 4" hole saw grabs too big of a bite, it can threaten to twist your wrists off!
