Title: Sure way to improve MPG
Post by: Dave M (RIP) on December 12, 2011, 02:41:29 pm
If you have a computer engine, just have the ECM set for 65% HP on the foot throttle and 100% on cruise control.  That is what all the trucking companies do with their company drivers.  Point is: makes the driver want to use the cruise control which makes for better MPG.
This is not a new thing, just thought it is worth mentioning.

I am sure my ISM is set 100% on both.

Interesting.

I have mine set up to opposite.  I have 100% throttle with the accelerator and have the cruise set to 75% max throttle position.

So my cruise is a "soft cruise"-- won't go to WOT to keep up speed.  But, I have full power with the throttle and can add throttle to cruise if I want to.

Some of the newer electronic engines offer "soft cruise" as an option-- not available on older mechanical engines.

That doesn't sound very safe to me, sometimes you need all the power that is available just to get out of someone's way or merge with traffic.

Getting into faster traffic, there is hardly never enough power, so you need to plan the attack based on what you got. ;D

Brett, I see your point, that would work for some of us, but in general using the cruise at full power gives better MPG, been proven through trucking fleets.  I am sure you are aware of all the readings and sensors available to management that are not available to mechanics nor drivers. Is how drivers get fired from time to time, when the  computer shows some bad traits some drivers do, like too many emergency brake applications etc.  Computers and insurance keep an eye on the drivers.
