Title: Photo upload - HWH aux compressor filter bowl replacement
Post by: Michelle on January 20, 2012, 08:33:58 pm
Next photo upload - the filter bowls for our aux compressor.  Steve discovered the condensation bowl was leaking (the fitting that the pop-off valve at the bottom of the bowl screws onto was actually cracked completely through and came apart in his hands).  There were also cracks in the base of the bowl itself.  He found microcracks and corrosion in the desiccant bowl, including the upper filter (which you wouldn't see unless you completely removed the filter housing, not just the bowl).

Steve and Michelle, great pictures on the HWH system! I noticed on the pic of the air flow you have the Teflon tape wrapped all the way to the end of the pipe nipple. You should start at least two threads back from the end, this is to prevent any chance of the tape going into the air line. Bad things happen when that happens. That goes for hydraulic lines also. Ive worked many years with air and hydraulic lines and that is one thing you want to avoid. On another note, your posts have been so helpful to me and others. Thanks!

Richard - thanks for the comment.  Yes, it is important not to allow the teflon tape to extend where it might end up in the system when you assemble the parts.  I know when I've watched Steve, he's always been careful to start the tape that thread or two back so I'm guessing that's just a misleading photo.  It's good to mention it for those who aren't familiar with air/gas/vacuum/hydraulic/etc systems.  As is not wrapping the heck out of a joint - more is not always better, especially in this case  ;)

In the past we've bought it from FOT or from Grainger.  Now I buy it in bulk and bag my own:
