Title: Dinette
Post by: Greg and Viv on January 29, 2012, 12:59:00 pm
Has anyone converted their existing dining area to a dinette style. We have the oval table and find it uncomfortable.

Are you talking about going from a free-standing table and chairs to a booth?

Yes, that's correct.

Jimmy,  You are not alone concerning the existing table, I had MOT give me a quote of $3,500.00 to remove it and install table & 2 chairs, when I got hard of hearing.  Thinking for that price, it should have the regular dinette setup.
No rush.
Cheers

Since we're still learning and discussing, what advantage do you see for the booth dinette over the table and chairs? More interior storage space? What about the flexibility of the free-standing chairs to be moved around a bit?

Please understand that I'm not trying to start any sort of argument. I really do want to know what advantage one has over the other. Most advertisements I've seen imply that a free-standing dinette is an upgrade over a booth dinette. Is it really an improvement, or just a sales pitch?

We have the dinette (opposing benches, table in the middle) and have toyed with the idea of replacing it with a sideboard/computer buffet against the wall and retaining the table portion, then using freestanding chairs.  Some friends have a setup like this in their Tiffin Phaeton and it's pretty neat.

We've also seen a newer style of dinette in a recent Phenix or two that we like if we were to stick with the current configuration.

I have had all three -

If DInette/booth can be made into a bed, that is my first choice -

otherwise choice is as follows in order of preference

Freestanding table and two chairs - two additional folding chairs and small extension for table near wall to make room for 4 in a pinch

Booth/dinette (dedicated as opposed to one that converst to a bed

Current "Jlounge with fixed table

Yuck, will change some day, even at $3500.

One of the mods the PO had done to our U280 by Foretravel is an L-shaped dinette.  IIRC, we had eight people sitting around it for dessert on evening.  The drop-leaf table collapses to the height of seats and makes a bed using the back cushions for a short person or two.  Storage under the seats, one drawer and two compartments with doors.  I have no idea what it cost in 1998 when it was done.

Replaced the 400 pound round corian table with a nice "harverst" table. Secured to the old table mounting arm with an aluminum angle bracket. Much better arrangement and seating.

Many thanks to everyone who commented. Some great ideas to think about. I'll take the discomfort over $3,500....
