Title: Foam Mattress Toppers
Post by: Coleen on February 20, 2012, 07:25:19 pm
Our mattress that came with our Foretravel is brand new. It is as hard as a rock which okay with Jerry, but me not so much. Have any of you added a foam mattress topper you are happy with? There are so many options and when I am reading the reviews some people say that theirs have failed them after a couple of months. I would like to make a smart purchase the first time around. TIA!

We had a memory-foam mattress topper that we used in the little travel trailer that helped take the dips out of the settee/bed. The DW put it on top of our FT mattress and it's plenty comfy but not quite wide enough. About 2" shy on each side. I have been eyeing "memory foam" mattress toppers for under $100 at Wally World but haven't pulled a trigger yet. Will have to this summer though.

The wife bought one from overstock.com some years ago,2 inch thick, it served us well until we bought a new Beautyrest Pillow top, now our daughter has it on her bed.

We've been using a 4" "cool foam" topper from Overstock.com for over a year and love it!  We purchased the king size one and were able to cut it down to fully cover the queen mattress.  The cut off pieces fit in two pillow bags and made nice foam pillows.

We got ours from Sams. Wife thinks it is great. She is happy and doesn't mind staying in the motorhome when we travel as it is so comfy.  I think the cost was a little over $100.    I certainly recommend it for anyone who trys to sleep on the standard mattress.  You know the saying "if momas not happy no one is happy".

I'll second that.  The Sams topper is great.  I haven't seen anything comparable sold at walmart.

The little bit of research I did before we bought our new mattress turned up complaints of rapid breakdown on far-east-made foam products.  Many of the memory foam offerings at Costco were among them (sadly, because we really like Costco).  You really have to read the label to be sure.

There are still a few companies making memory foam here in the States.  Foamex is one (our mattress is an Aerus Natural Plush we bought from Sam's).  Years ago when we bought a topper for our class C, Carpenter was the leading brand (not sure if they're still around).  The Aerus mattress had none of the "chemical" odor occasionally complained about, either.

I was looking at Overstock and that is where my head started spinning reading the reviews. :-\ I am going to start over based on what I have learned here so far!

The DW bought both "memory foam" toppers via Overstock about 6 years ago. The big one (which would have fit the coach) burned up in a shop fire in 2010. The second one was a smaller size. Wish we still had the big one. I think she paid $70 for them back then. I used the big one as a topper for a crappy bed in the lake cabin for a couple of years until we moved in and brought our regular bed with us.

Too bad Sam's Club has not infiltrated our area (PNW).

We bought a 3" memory foam topper from Costco, IIRC, almost four years ago. It is very comfortable and is showing no signs of deterioration.

We also bought the Sam's club 3 inch memory foam topper about 3 years ago and  we are very happy with it.
It is showing no deterioration.  I like it better than our all Latex  mattress we have at home which cost many times more.

We (well mostly me) decided on a topper by Aerus it is made in the USA. I went with the 2" as it had great reviews and I am thinking since Jerry liked the bed as it was it might be a compromise. :D We purchased it from Sam's Club and with shipping it was under $70.00. I will post again after a month or so to let you know how it worked out. All of your posts helped me so much!

Remember that Costco will allow you to return at anytime if memory foam fails, which should eliminate concerns about who makes the foam.

I wanted to give y'all an update on the mattress topper. We bought the 2'' Aerus from Sams Club mostly because it is made in the USA. We have used it for a week now and we are very happy with it. It is a huge improvement and a great value for less than $100. No complaints from Jerry either who was just has happy with the "park bench" that is under the topper. ;D

We installed the Nova Form (Costco) last year and really like it too.

It has been a year since the last entry on this thread and Bill & I are now in the market for a memory foam topper for our rock hard bed in the coach. Any new advice out there?  Sams Club still the best?

Thanx  Jan

I would just ditch the mattress and get a basic original Tempurpedic.

Hi Folks:

Had a topper in our previous SOB, liked it very much purchased it st KOLH"S. It is a 2" with another inch of poly fiber. It is great also have one on the home bed, however they are more than $100. I think about $300 or $400, they were having a special sale, buy one get one.

The other solution is a sleep number bed. When we picked up our U270 at MOT we found one in the coach. We love it, can adjust it to your liking. Not sure if we will need the topper.

JUst a little food for thought.

We looked at the sleep number beds not too long ago, and thought that they might be nice. Haven't done much research on them, though, just saw one in the store.

The mattress that came with the mpg was horrible, but we put a memory foam topper on it (not quite the right size, but good enough) and that helped immensely. So far we've only slept one night on the mattress in our coach (with sleeping bags on it), and it is definitely firmer than the "firm" mattress here at home.

I bought a 3" topper from somewhere, I think it was from Amazon. We like it, but it does make the bed 3" taller. We do "climb" into bed.

We have an air bed. It's important to let some air out if you plan to go up in altitude more than about 3,000' during a day. The previous owner told the story of the "exploding bed." :)) They neglected to let air out of the bed before going over the mountains. They replaced it with another air bed. The real "Sleep Number" bed may be smarter than our "wannabe" air bed.

Our favorite mattress was a "short queen" that we had custom made at a local mattress factory. We tried several combinations of material and with the help of the owner, had one built with memory foam, some latex, and some quilting. Unfortunately, it had to go with the SOB coach that required the short queen.

We have the Sleep Number bed in the Foretravel and like it very much.  Way better than the stock matress. We have a Latex bed at home and it's very comfortable too.

My 2 cents:

Sleepnumber: light, easy to move into coach - our favorite bed for house and coach.  Will expand (get very hard) with engine heat and higher altitude.  I always try to lower pressure when we travel but don't always remember - hasn't caused a failure yet in 10+ years with it.  Pump operates fine on even old Taytronics inverter but they now have a newer and very quite pump (that's what we have in the house now).

Temperpedic: Great feel and very comfy.  We had one for the house for 5 years but due to heat buildup after a 3-4 hours of sleep we went back to Sleepnumber last year.  Sometimes we  would wake up at 2am very hot.  Our experience appears to be in the minority and they say they have new designs that minimize this effect.  We tried various toppers/mattress pads over the years to try to mitigate (BTW Temperpedic advises against any toppers).  Most of the time we slept fine.  We have many friends and family with Temperpedics that don't have this issue.  Mattress is very heavy and in a coach application might tax the bed gas lifting springs to the point of needing a helper stick - just something to be prepared for.  Best way to move is to fold in half lengthwise using two wide straps to hold it - then (with a friend) pick up (or drag as the case maybe) by each strap.  Don't store folded.  Never done it but loading one into a coach might be a real chore.  They are hard to move because they have no rigidity but are heavy - it's probably better to ask an enemy to help you move one so you don't lose a friend!

Bottom line:  If you liked what you have (or had) in your house, you will like it in the coach too.

We have a 3" memory foam topper from Costco also and really like it.  Have had it for almost a year and still perfect.
Does add height, though.

If you are short, you might need to either add a ladder to the side of the bed or lower the engine :)) .

We got the Costco gel foam topper last month and put it on the air bed. The wife loves it. I spent 20 years sleeping on an 18" wide steel plate with a laughable foam mattress so I can sleep on anything.

All Foam toppers seem to retain body heat. We had tempupedic mattress for 30 days found it too hot but liked the way it supported entire body.

Costco foam topper holds heat as well, just not as bad, and that is what we settled on (Queen) about $130.00

Not all.  Check these out:  3" CoolRest Gel™ Memory Foam Topper | Memory Foam Toppers | BedInABox (http://www.bedinabox.com/product/6244.html).
*"Three inches of CoolRest Gel™ GEL infused memory foam offers the same pressure relief as our CoolRest™ Memory Foam.
*CoolRest Gel™ foam allows for greater heat diffusion for cooler sleep."

We have a different brand memory foam mattress in the stick house that has the Cool Gel infused in the memory foam.  It is locally made.  Very little heat retention!!  Really like it as compared to our old memory foam mattress that did not have it.  The old one retained heat horribly!!
