Title: New Good Sam// Pilot & Flying J card for cents off fuel
Post by: Dan Stansel on February 28, 2012, 10:27:24 pm
FYI:  Applied today for the Pilot and Flying J GoodSam card.  Works like a credit card but must be paid off at end of month.  No carry over balance.  .03 cents off on gas and .05 cents off on diesel and .10 cents off gal of bulk propane.  50% off dump station fee.  Get the savings instantly at the pump.  Called "The RV Plus Card"
To obtain go to GoodSamClub.com/pfj  .  Must be a GoodSam member.  This info was in their latest magazine.
/////Another card available is the Walmart Discover card  which will get you .05 cents off fuel at Murphys  USA stations next to Walmarts.//////Another card is the Murphy USA Visa card which will get you .03 cents off fuel at Murphy USA stations not located with Walmart.  Does any one else know of other discounts?  With fuel going up up and up we need all the help we can obtain.

Dan, I found a site explaining the program at Krogers, points awarded for purchases. I do not know how widespread Krogers are located, the fuel volume limit or if you can get a motorhome into their sites.  Here is the program:

...... you to receive savings of up to $1 per gallon on fuel purchases at Kroger and 10¢ per gallon at participating Shell locations. You may redeem 100 points at Shell for a 10¢ per gallon savings. And you may redeem up to 1,000 points in a single fill-up at Kroger for up to $1 off per gallon. For each increment of 100 points redeemed at Kroger, 10¢ off per gallon will be awarded. For example:
• 100 points = 10¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up at Shell.
• 100 points = 10¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up at Kroger.
• 200 points = 20¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up at Kroger.
• 1,000 points = $1 off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up at Kroger.

FWIW, hear is an alternative with potentially better results over time.

Cash Rewards Visa, Master Card, Discover, and American Express cards will pay you 1, 2, 3 or occassionally even 5 percent for using their card to purchase gas and diesel.  At a price point of $4/gallon, 1% is 4 cents, and 5% is 20 cents.  They pay you in the form of reward points, which in most cases you can redeem as cash once a certain level has been reached. There are additional ways to earn and redeem points, but that goes beyond our focus here.

So - whenever you use Pilot/Flying J for gas or diesel fueling, get and use a Pilot/Flying J Frequent Fueler Advantage RV card.  Use it at the pump to get an immediate 1 cent/gallon price reduction.  Then pay with a cash rewards credit card.  At a price point of $4/gallon, you will always end up paying least 5 cents per gallon less than pump price (1 cent at pump plus 4 cents cash rewards redeemed later), and potentially 21 cents (1 cent at pump plus 20 cents cash rewards redeemed later).  You could get even better results with some grocery store fuel promotions.  A card with annual fees will take some or all of this back, so it ultimately might not help reduce costs in this scenario.

And - you will not need to give Pilot your bank account number, and you will not need to give them permission to go straight that account every month and take what they need.  Something about this method of payment doesn't set well with me. It's easy to avoid with online banking, and I always do so.

Because I top off my propane only a couple of times per year, and because I have needed to use a Flying J dump only once that I can remember, savings here would be negligable in my case.  You situation might be different.

I'm not familiar with Walmart co-branded credit cards.  I would check to see how cents off - and percents off - actually work to lower actual amount you end up paying for a $4 gallon of fuel.

Is it just me, or do others find Flying J/Pilot fuel price to be at lease 10c higher than surrounding stations?  We haven't used Flying J/Pilot in over a year.  Does limit your selection, but if you run in the top half of the tank (which I TRY) not hard to find a branded station.  FWIW.

The Chevron truck stop nearest our home location is at $4.44 when the closest diesel outlets are all at $4.25. Maybe they just think truckers can pay them more. With the capability of going 1,000 miles on a tank of diesel I like the ability to choose the best price. When we had the 5th wheel and could only go 300 miles on a tank I felt trapped into paying more.

I haven't checked recently. But when we were on our trip last spring, it seemed to me like Flying J/Pilot stations were higher than other stations as well. In some cases even higher than another station right across the interstate.

So we never filled up at a Flying J/Pilot station.  We did fill up at various Love's stations though.

Yes I have found them to be higher too. I use a credit card from Pentagon Federal Credit Union. I get 5% back on all purchases of fuel.  At 3.99 that works out to 19 cents a gallon back.  I can go anywhere to get it too.  Works when I fill up the truck too.
