Title: Replacing Dinette With A Desk
Post by: Coleen on March 30, 2012, 09:10:02 am
Greetings All!

When you walk into our mid-entry door to your immediate left and across from the galley there is a dinette that only Stan Laurel could sit at. :)) The length is 61 inches and the depth is 26 inches. I was thinking the space would be much more functional if there was a desk there with a single chair. Neither Jerry or I are crafty with wood so I was wondering if anyone has had MOT, FT or anyone else build a desk for their FT and what would we expect to pay? TIA for any feedback.

We had the dinette removed and the wizards at FOT (David Flanagan, Larry Ratliff, etc) built a wonderful "desk/buffet" that stretched from the entry to the wall.  I could put my 2 chairs underneath for dining or as a computer desk.  It was also excellent as additional counter space.  David used a lovely walnut and put an access hole in the top (with a cover) so I could run my computer cords to the power source on the pedestal from the old dinette table, which remained.  (I will try and post some photos ... but I am a nitwit who is still figuring out this Macbook.)  Our U225 had a sort of cantilever table that stowed near the recliner in the living room, but was annoying and bulky.  David cut the dinette table top and used a bit more than half to make a larger "lamp table" by the recliner and we did away with the old arrangement.  Loved it!

I have a little different floor plan but am having a desk built.  Solid Walnut. It cost me $2,300 :)  Matching Corian top.  Could have been cheaper but what the heck right? ha!

We have one of those pull-up cantilever tables and at first I thought I'd like it but now, not so much. We have no dinette (just the mini-dinette that won't fit two mature (ahem!) adults) and thought it would be convenient for meals but it's too high for the recliner (although ok for the barrel chair). It's too big for a coffee table and the little cabinet top is too small for anything but a coffee cup. I may have to experiment with a new table that's smaller. Thanks for the idea. :)

FOT removed our J lounge dinette and replaced it with a table.  Two stand alone chairs fit nicely, and David Flanagan included two file drawers as well.  We love it.  There was some re-routing of electric and W/D water lines, but it was all done nicely.

Coleen,
I posted some pics in "What have you done to your coach today" back in Nov 2011 don't know how to link it but you can do a search under for table with Rick as the author and you might find it.
Good luck
Rick

Not exactly the same Mod, but while we were at the Good Sam Rally in Phoenix recently, I walked miles it seemed through rows and rows of coaches, to search out FT's. One of the six found was a beautiful 36' u270 owned by the Director of New Mexico's Good Sam Organization/no. on Drivers side top was #12957. 'She' had some interesting options built into their coach, one of which was the removal of the table/chair configuration and the installation of a custom built(by FT) piece of furniture.  It was "in appearance" a desk, but under the top surface was a full piano keyboard. Yup! Desk on top and piano 1" under!  Also one side of seating position was a printer cabinette and on the other file cabinet space.
Older style "pull-up/lay down-from earlier versions of FT's" table was used forward of this for eating. Behind this eating/cabinette were 2 nice lounge chairs.

She said, FT had asked to be able to hold on to 'her' design for future FT owners....so asking them should produce a sketch at least.

Thanks for the tip! We will make a point of asking FT. :)

I replaced the lift up side table area with a desk and converted the stationary barrel chair into the desk chair.  Put some laminate on top temporarily until I get around to ordering corian. Old post and explanation here somewhere, I just don't know how to link it. FWIW
