I was tired of our anemic central vacuum. i yanked it out and replaced it with one of those $30 little shop vacs. i used the switch box from the old vacuum and wired it into a project box from radio shack. the suction hose slides off and the cord is a little long so i can remove the vac from the bay to clean it.
Huge difference in performance. I am really happy with the results.

Have been thinking about that for some time. Small shop vacs are cheap and do a good job. Did you mount it down below and bring the hose and cord up through the floor?

The small wonder built in vacs actually worked well. Most customers put the lid on crooked with one of the internal clips outside the body cocking the lid and losing suction.
Cannot tell you how many vac lids I put back on the base and then they sucked pretty well.
A 110 volt seperate plug in powered beater bar head from a home central vac system Realiy helped the central vac work better.....

The little shop vac is right next to where the old vac was. i used the existing port/on and off switch. the old vac had transformer and switching box. i used the same circuitry, but it powers the shop vac now. no changes in the coach interior. it really works well now. we have laminate and a couple of rugs. the suction will pull dog hair off the rugs with one or two passes, and will pull dirt several inches across the laminate to the nozzle.
You guys with the bigger coaches could use a bigger vac, and empty it once a year!
