Title: PT10 generator/1996 U295
Post by: Steve & Ginny Hill on June 04, 2012, 03:32:47 pm
On our recent trip up to Destin, the generator ran the whole trip (8hrs), then just before we arrived, it shut off. Fuel guage was showing slightly less than 1/2 tank. I thought maybe the guage was erroneous, and that I'd run it out of fuel. Filled the coach, and it only took 1/2 tank, so I couldn't have run the generator out of fuel. On the return trip, the generator started right up, and ran for approximately 3 hrs, then shut off. I pulled over, checked oil and coolant levels, made sure radiator fan was running. all were fine. Re-started it, drove another 4hrs home, and it never quit again. My first thought is fuel line since it's original, but would it run that long if it had a line sucking air?

Steve, A fuel line will cause symptoms like this.  Use a gas can and another piece of hose to supply fuel, let it run and see if it will keep running.  If so suspect the line. These hoses deteriorate from the inside and it may be cloggig up internally.  I assume you have already replaced the fuel filter and checked to condition of the air filter.

Steve, you need to check the fuel pump, sounds like it is getting weak.

MIGHT THINK FUEL FILTER, JUST A HINT. Fuel filters that are stopping up will act exactly like what you describe.

Steve, I did the generator dance a couple of years ago. 1st it was the electric fuel pump with that you could here the generator running weakly and missing before shut down and on start up. I got the fuel pump from NAPA. Some time later it started doing the shutoff thing again no telling how long it would run then off with oil light blinking. After messing around with it (oil pressure SW, new wire from switch and so on) replaced the controller everything is good.
These generators are old and vibrate bad check for loose/broken wires as well. Also when you slide the generator out there is a cover underneath the coach with 4 bolts in it, if you take it out of the way you can get to the back of the generator(where all the sending units and wiring is). Happy hunting.
