Title: Sticks and Stones
Post by: TheBrays on June 07, 2012, 09:24:50 am
I have read about violent winds embedding straw, grass, etc, in boards and such.
I guess that's not  much different from what's happening under my coach.

We've been driving I40 in NC toward a stop in Washington, DC.

Thought you would be interested in the following picture.
Some where along the way  a stick the size of a smallist broom handle as been driven through the big Foretravel mudflap.

Not much harm, no flagrant foul.

We get to DC in a week for about 10 days and then on toward NY. Due at the Liberty Harbor RV June 22th.

Routeing hints through NJ appreciated.

My suggestion is to stay on the Interstate freeways and NJ Turnpike if you can (Garden State Parkway is good for north/south on eastern NJ).  The RV Park is a short walk to Exchange Place station for the PATH subway trains to NYC and Newark and Jersey City's Journal Square.  Have fun in the big city, there's only one like it!

Elliot, Lucky thing that that piece of wood did not go thru a windshield.  Life is short, you never know what is coming at you.
Drive careful.

Wow - looks like tornado damage.  I can not imagine that happening while driving down the road.  But then if your tires picked it up and propelled it toward the mudflap at highway speeds, I guess it might have been moving a tornado speed.

Oh, watch out for those drivers in NJ.  They actually think that they always have the right of way.  And the other place your going, well I took that off my map a long time ago.  Drove a tractor trailer over the George Washington Bridge, onto various parts of those islands, one to many times.

I would gladly settle for the broom handle!! Last Sunday I had a hawk hit the driver's side windshield while we were doing 72 MPH. Hawk came from left to right going about 30. Luckily it was our pickup that got it and not the coach. Glass everwhere and I had to lean over to DW's side to see to get home.
Two years ago, on the south frontage road, same distance from arterial highway(!!) a deer came up out of the ditch and took out the driver's side lights and grill on our toad.
Definitely plan on staying away from that area with the coach!!

DO not go up 95 it will kill you.  Take I 66 West to I 81 and run that up to I 78.  It is a bit further if you are in DC proper but there are no real tolls.  Then you hit the NJ turnpike and you are on it for one exit and you get off for Liberty Harbor. You will get off and have to go down and make uturn under the roadway.  That is how the exit is designed but I can make it so you should too.  THen you drive down a city street and it looks like it is going to end and get really narrow.  IT DOES but that is where you turn right into Liberty Harbor. Drive down that short road and you are there.

If you run uo 95 it will take longer you have more expensive fuel and tolls will kill you. In fact you might spend more in tolls than in fuel for that part of the trip.

As for the wood thru the skirt, I am sure it was throw up by the tires.  HIt something just right and you can do som serious damage. I had to have a new hose put on from a rock that spun up from my tire last trip.

John you are correct regarding tolls up I-95 in MD and the Jersey TPKE!

A couple of years ago towing I drove I-95 from Columbia MD, south of Baltimore, to Jersey TPKE pass Liberty Campground on my way to Croton on Hudson the toll cost was near $100 by the time I past the Liberty Harbor exit! Also note: last year MD raised their tolls 50% so cost will be higher now!

If coming North from DC better to take I-95 to I-695N towards I-83N Towson into Harrisburg to I-81 to I-78; then as John directed I-78 to Liberty Harbor RV.  There are no tolls on I-95 between DC to Baltimore I-695 and there is one toll on I-78 which should be approximately $5.00 towing.

Any questions call me 410 877-4816.

John great seeing you and Linda last week and my trip back from Watkins Glenn was good.
