Title: 3rd Brake Light
Post by: TheBrays on July 07, 2012, 03:22:19 pm
Thanks to other folks I know that the stop/tail light assemblies at the corners of the coach (probably all the Unicoach line) are from a Ford '92 E-series.
I AM interested in how it differs from the '95 - 2000s which Ford says are the same, but that is a different question.

In the middle of the back is a large flat brake light assembly. It has 'SAE U-92 EE' on the face but that isn't the part number.

What is the part number or even, what vehicle did it come from?
Curious, might want to replace with LED but have to know what to source.

TIA

My coach was the center light you mention, during the new LED tail light conversion, Xtreme removed the internals of that light and installed a nice LED setup, so it still looks the same, now is LED.
No idea beyond that.

Elliot, That high level brake light comes from the same Ford that the Tail lights do.

Been looking for this assembly myself and have yet to find one. If, I could find a spare I would see what I could come up with in the way of a redesign to match the CarID taillights I just installed.
As far as the difference between the previous and newer model taillights, The older ones had a separate turn signal from the brake and running lights.
They make an adaptor with fuses that you can use to change the wiring over (much like adding a trailer harness). Little time consuming but fun upgrade. Check my photos for the taillights view.

FWIW,
I changed my 3rd tail/brake light out.  I went to Ford and they do supply a new one still. It is about 100+ dollars.  I tried to find an LED one on Ebay or the net and was unsuccessful.  I really think that it would be great to change it out to LED.  However, I was unsuccessful in locating a LED replacement.  I have a 96 and though it is in good shape, I really did not wish to spend a little over 100 for a replacement 3rd brake light. I was able to find a used one on ebay for about 20.  It was in good condition too.  My old one had a couple of cracks in it that I think were due to UV deterioration.  That was the reason for the search in the first place.  I was afraid that eventually there would be a water issue which would lead to failure/shorting etc. If you do find an LED, let us all know, but I really looked pretty good without success.

Charles, I know where a third brake light is and when we are in CO in a couple weeks I will snatch it.  I will then see if  I can convert it to LED.

Gary,
You are correct in that you can certainly change the bulb to a LED replacement.  I do like the LED lights, and that is what I was not able to find.  It seems that with all of the vans out there, somebody would have developed a tricked out replacement for the 3rd light like I have seen for the stop/turn signals.  But, I haven't found the LED variety 3rd brake light.  I do like the look of the LED replacement stop/turn signals but have not changed mine out yet.  I have not had a single problem with the OEM ones, so...., I could changed them but don't feel justified in changing them yet.  Had I found the LED 3rd brake light, I might very well had a different looking FT from the rear. LOL

When Extreme Graphics worked their magic on my coach they changed the third brake light to LED.  Might want to talk with James on how he did it.

Simple, just change the bulbs for  T15R 12v LED and they are the baynet fitting as in pics.
