Title: Safety While in Nac and at FOT, MOT and Xtreme
Post by: John S on July 30, 2012, 10:51:50 am
Well, I thought about not posting this but it should probably be posted to warn our members.  I know that stuff can happen most anywhere but I realized something this trip and it was a bit eye opening. WHen you are at FOT did you know just under the highway is the County Jail. They release offenders from there all the time.  That is the issue and is also an issue if you are in the lots around the area. We have cars and motorhomes and are not always as security conscious as we should be.

Here is the story. It started over at Xtreme and but it could have happened anywhere.  Jennifer was in town early to do stuff and was by the office on Sat morning at 7 30 am.  I know that Gary was up and around the back of the shop around that time and I had walked the pups about 830 am.  Sometime between 7 30 and 8 30 in the morning a guy broke into Xtreme and went thru the place and took  the keys to their truck and jeep.  Then he left in the truck.  Jennifer was called about 9 15 saying that they thought the door was broken and when she looked sure enough it was.  SHe came around and go me and I got my partner and we went in and cleared the building while she called the sheriff. They deputy showed up and put out an ATL on the truck and we were waiting for them to come back for the Jeep next. Well the guy was in  a ditch after ransacking a house about 50 miles up the road and the Cherokee County Sheriff was talking with him when the truck came thru as stolen. Well, the guy was arrested and hauled off. Now the part we all need to be aware of.  The jail is right neat FOT and this guy was released from Jail that morning and decided he did not want to walk any further. He could have gone in any direction but he chose to go into town and out on North street. IF he had chosen to go out on 21 then he could have walked into the FOT lot and looked for a ride.  The security guy is not there in the morning at that time and I know we are moving cars and coaches around in the morning to get ready for service too.  So be aware of who is around and I would take my keys out of my tow car after I move it to get my coach out for service.  I think we should be a bit more careful around the lot. I see lots of us treat it as a camp ground but in the mornings we might want to be a bit more careful especially at FOT which is very close to the Jail.

Living in Nacogdoches for 30 years and knowing the history, it is always best to caution on the side of safety.  Nacogdoches is usually a quiet little town but it has a lot of outsiders and activity at the jail. I believe FOT is a safe place but you can have a thief anywhere.  I always lock and secure my vehicles.  As John indicated it is the time when you will be right back when they get you.  A reminder is always a good thing.  DAN

I agree, for the most part it is safe but crime has increased a bit over the yrs.

I do not want to overly excite people about this but it did happen and the worst part was that there were three occupied coaches there. WIth all the road though it was hard to hear much and it was pretty quick. I know at night there is security at FT too but this was morning time. I just was thinking of the times I will unhook the car and leave it with the keys in it while I back the coach into a spot. That is all the time the guy will need to jump into the car and be off.
