Post by: D.H. Spoor on August 23, 2012, 08:38:33 pm
Bob Hughes, Foretravel 14811, passed away yesterday.  The following is extracted from his obituary:

Robert J. Hughes, 89, of Houston and formerly of Port Townsend and Anacortes, Washington and Sun City Georgetown, Texas, passed away August 22, 2012 after a brief illness.

Bob served proudly in the U.S. Air force during WWII as a Crew Chief of a B-25 stations in Italy. During the war, bob and his crew flew 35 sorties over bombing targets in Hungary, Germany, Italy, Austria and Yugoslavia. After the war, Bob enjoyed a 40 year career with Shell Oil company, where he toured the world doing promotions with WWII hero Jimmy Doolittle, worked on Shell television and print advertising campaigns, and was a recognized expert in oils and lubricants.

After retiring from Shell, bob and Sylvia shared a life of leisure and travel based in Port Townsend and Anacortes, Washington and Sun City Georgetown, Texas.

He and Sylvia traveled by Airstream, by Country Coach, and in 2002 they moved up to a Foretravel, MC # 14811.  Sylvia was diagnosed with Cancer shortly after they bought the Foretravel, and their travel opportunities were few.  My DW and I became close friends and traveling regularly with Bob and enjoyed many miles.

Many of you may remember him.  The full obituary is on the Houston Chronicle website (Houston News, Sports, Business, and Entertainment - The Houston Chronicle at (http://www.chron.com)) . Published with the approval of Ralph Burch, Bob's Nephew, Attorney, and Executor.

God bless him! 35 missions! RIP.

And they were so young. And they knew, going out on a mission, that some would not return. And they went out - again and again....Simply amazing...

RIP indeed.

best, paul

I didn't know Mr. Hughes, but I don't have to, I miss and respect him, as I do ALL the members of the "GREATEST GENERATION"!
What he, and so many others did for us all can NEVER be acknowledged or the words THANK YOU spoken too many times to the survivors.

I can't help but feel ashamed everyday when I see how we the Children of that generation have squandered away almost everything they sacrificed to give us.

I will call my Father today and tell him I love him.
Rest in peace MR. Hughes. YOU WILL BE MISSED!

It is because of men like Bob Hughes that we enjoy the lifestyle each of us has today.  Were it not for Mr. Hughes and the rest of the Greatest Generation, English would be our second language.
