Title: Transmission selector buttons
Post by: Jerry Hurley on September 16, 2012, 11:10:12 am
I have the 6 speed Allison 4060. More then 50 percent of the time when I push any button D, N, R, it does not take, shift. Push in hard, soft, whatever. It's like it does not make contact. Anybody else have/had this problem?

Jerry,

An unusual issue on the Allison shift pad.

Does the indicator window change to the proper/chosen gear, but the gear not engage, or does the shift pad window stay in the original gear?

Are there any stored codes in the Allison (pull out your book and using the up and down arrows and mode button, you can check for stored codes).  It is also on Allison's website: http://www.allisontransmission.com/servlet/DownloadFile?Dir=publications/pubs&FileToGet=SA3360EN.pdf (http://www.allisontransmission.com/servlet/DownloadFile?Dir=publications/pubs&FileToGet=SA3360EN.pdf)

About the only thing you can do is to take loose and tightly reconnect the pig-tail coming out of the shift pad and also the two gang plugs on the Allison ECM.

Hi throttle engine RPMs will prevent going into D. Barry

I had this issue on my previous GV and the read out would not show any selection. Spoke to an Allison guy and he asked wether the plastic buttons were hard or softish? Mine was hard. It seemed the protection cover would not allow the carbon contacts to work so I bought a new shift pad to replace.First get a hair dryer if they are hard and warm the pad up and try. When I took it apart I cleaned the contacts up etc and replaced and guess what it worked and stayed good all the time So I still have a brand new pad and this coach will most probably be the same part #. This may not be your problem but I would suggest you take it apart and have a look at those contacts. This is only if the pad does not read the selection (either F or Rev), but having said that I personally would still try to clean (very carefully too I may add) and see if things change.

Yes, but in this case, the selected gear would flash.  In other words, when hitting "D", "D" would flash and the transmission would not go into gear.

Had same issue with 95 U280 with 3060.  Took shift pad apart and cleaned membrane with electrical cleaner.  Took care of my problem for less than $4.

It will not shift to any gear IF you have the cruise control on for warmup.

Yes, same as too fast an idle speed.

Thanks guys, I will try to clean contacts. Buttons are soft and push in fine, it is like they do not make contact about 50 percent of the time.... Jer

Jerry,
Mine does it once in while if the weather is cold enough, like around 30F*. Once it is warmed up it works so I'm staying out of the cold weather for my fix.
Good luck,
Rick

On my 95 U320 I had the same problem. Took the shifter assembly apart and cleaned the membrane/circuit board with electrical cleaner, as others have responded, and it worked like new.
