Title: Leveling your coach at campgrounds
Post by: Green99 on January 11, 2013, 11:04:00 am
I have been considering what grade a foretravel with air ride could compensate for when parking at state parks or campgrounds.  My previous SOB with Hyd. jacks could compensate for a reasonable grade.  Just curious about you long time owners thoughts.

Thanks,
Jerry

My 34 foot could level easily but my 42 footer is a bit more finicky with site selection.  The travel on the airbags is the same but I am longer.  No issues really but on the 42 if the grade is a bit steeper than what I can level I put blocks under the wheel and it works fine.  More work but I have only had to do that three times or when I am at the grandkids house in the street.

A few miles from Lake Tahoe on the Truckee river, we found a site close to 30 feet long with a log across the back marking the end. To keep the front end clear of the road, I backed until the rear tires were against the log. While the site appeared flat, it did slope toward the road so when I hit the level button, the rear settled down onto the log. Fortunately, I was still in the driver's seat and was able to raise the coach when  I heard the noise. Other than my ego, no visible damage.

We do carry a few 2x6s for the state parks or forest service campgrounds that are marginal. I always try to block both of the duals rather than a board under one if the rear is the low spot.

I was amazed at the side to side level range. We were at a freinds house in N.C. and his yard sloped considerably and I thought I would have to use blocks under the wheels on the low side. Nope, leveled right up. Enough so that the gen-set exhaust was almost in the dirt on the high side.

On my 36 footer I can be out about 11" in 7' side to side an about 11" in 19' 6" front to back. Gam

Thanks all,
That is far more than I expected to hear.

Just a hint,  watch where your tire mudflaps are when backing in to a site.  I backed mine up against a wood retaining wall and when I leveled up the tire had the flap trapped and as the body raised it tore the flap off one side.  I now check first.

Gary,
Not sure what happened, but mine was pulled loose on one side.  May have been a similar issue.
