Title: OIL Change Milage
Post by: Dan Stansel on January 14, 2013, 10:38:02 pm
AT what milage on your oil do you change it??  I have been changing at 7,000 miles but that gets expensive if that is a low nr.  I want to change it when recommended but I do not remember the milage.  I currently have 4750 miles on the current oil change and very few hours on the gen.
When should it be changed?/ Planning trips for this year and looking where the oil change fits in.  DAN

I do an oil analysis at every oil change and they now have a good history of the engine.
I just got my report back for this change which I had 8200 miles on it in 1 year. Could have easily gone 10,000 miles according to them. I have never added any oil between changes.. I change the Gen oil at 200 hours and filter at 400 hours. I have 3600 hours on it.

I change the engine every 15K miles. That is about twice a year.  I also change the generator at around the 300 hour mark and that is about 3 times a year.  I am well over 3000 hours.

I have the ISM 450, and I believe the intervals per manual are 6 months or 15,000 miles whichever occurs first. I change annually, which is about 7-10K miles. I cage Generator at 200 hours and again at 400 hours with a filter change at that time. 200 hours may be a lot for some folks, but it is just three hot NASCAR weekends for me.

Thanks John and I see 12 months, not 6, so I am within the factory guidlines.

Yes but alas I never use the time interval.  And this interval is only for electronic engines. Cummins advertises it is cheaper to run that way too.

Different engines and different age (year of engine production) have DIFFERENT oil change interval recommendations. Later model "cleaner" engines have longer change intervals. In general, larger engines (larger oil capacity) have longer change intervals.

These recommendations include both mileage and TIME.

So, check on the recommended change intervals for your engine per your owners manual.

Yes that is true Brett and I looked in my manual for my years that I owned. I started with a 99 and had a 2000 and now a 2001 and all of them were 15000 miles the same as the link I posted.  I know the mechanical engines had much shorter interval. You can probably go even longer with analysis or a Royal Purple type of oil as well, but that is another conversation and it still requires analysis.

Dan,
I agree with having analysis so you know the condition of the oil.  That will help you determine when a change is necessitated.  While the manual has recommendations, there are other contributing factors such as driving conditions idle time and others.  Just as with coolant analysis there is a lot to learn from the results.
