Title: blind spot quick fix
Post by: RRadio on January 29, 2013, 02:57:04 pm
I was desperate to fix the dangerous blind spot to the right front of my coach. I never have a passenger in the right front seat to tell me if there's a small car beside me in the right lane and I have no way to see when changing lanes to the right. I bought a fresnel lens and stuck it on the passenger side window and now I can see the top of the car beside me in the right lane. It's one of those fresnel lenses designed for the back window of a van. I bought it at Pep Boys for less than $9 and installed it in a matter of minutes. It's hidden in the mirror section. Look carefully or ask the clerk to help you find it. The other solution was to purchase a "top hat" mirror from Ramco, the manufacturer of the mirrors on my Foretravel. These top hat mirrors are custom made and cost at least $80 each plus shipping. It takes Ramco a few days to build the mirror and ship it to you. I didn't order one so I can't comment on installation or how well it works. Other people on this forum have them and have written about them before. The fresnel lens quick fix is all I really need. I can't see the whole car beside me, but I can see the car's roof so at least I know it's there... which could save someone's life!... hope this helps.

Twice within days of buying our FT I had horns blow to my right a when I put the blinker on and started lane change. Really gets the belly butterflys going. :-[

When we arrived at a CG in Florida I called Ramco and ordered the tophats. Quick easy install and no angry horns blowing since. Didn't really need it on the driver side but thought it would look funny with just one.
I know that some found the Fresnel lens to work well too.

Am I missing something here? Both my mirrors have the large, remote controlled, heated units on the top of smaller manually adjusted mirrors for the closeup blind spots.

Dean, does this then mean that the newer units don't have the configuration like mine or is this something extra?

I have a U270 which came with the same configuration you have. The "tophat" mirror is an add on convex mirror that allows filling in any blind spots that the flat glass and lower convex may not see. So you end up with a 3 piece mirror.
Some U295's and most all U320's come standard with them.

This thread has much info and some pics. TopHat Mirror addition (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=15158.msg91386#msg91386)

I had top hats put on over 4 years ago and love them.  Really makes a difference in eliminating blind spot and wide angle views when backing in.  Worth every penny!!
