Title: Progressive Industries EMS power protection
Post by: Barry & Cindy on February 28, 2013, 01:07:06 am
I just read that all Progressive Industries EMS power protection models now have a lifetime warranty.

This is pretty cool, especially since they have great customer service and the units have field replaceable parts.

Agree, I received my Progressive EMS-HW50C yesterday, had a good look at it, am impressed with the setup and the simple installation requirements and happy to see the wire for the remote display is simply a telephone type with the quick disconnects.  Looks great so far, hope to get it installed this weekend.
Delivered from Hanover MD, must have a few wharehouses around the country? Took 4 days delivery.
Thanks for the info Barry

Barry, That is good info for the non electrical types, as I notice no ground wire, only the 6/3, should be the 6/4 SO Cord type. Wonder where the green wire from the 4 wire electric cord goes?  Will leave that issue alone.
Somethings scare me ! :o

If the link comes up 30 AMP, try to search for it on the same web site.

It comes up 50 amp.

BUT, watch their ebay store too.  Sometimes they have really low prices there.

Opened up the bed/access to the electrical area, make plan of attack, first , need make a mount for wall on engine side to mount the box, will leave plenty space for all needed wireing etc.  Have very strong feelings about removing the Bose speaker system under the bed, make block off plates to cover the speaker holes.
Is there any reason to keep that noise maker under the bed ??
Thanks

That's funny, I used the bedroom Bose yesterday for the 1st time in 7 1/2 years. That was because the little AM/FM clock radio had poor reception here in the Keys. I use the talk radio (now Bose) for back ground noise for nap time.

I am finally getting around to installing my EMS-HW50C. I read the directions and this thread. I went out for what I thought would be very strait forward. My first dilemma is I have two AC panels. It looks crowded in there also. I was thinking I would install it on the feed into the panel so I am confused with where to place it with the two panels? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Phil

I thought I uploaded 4 Pics I will try again

A less closeup shot would be helpful.  As others have noted, the installation is not quite as trivial as it is sometimes represented to be.  You absolutely have to get it right the first time and any questions or doubts should be resolved before proceeding.  I personally found it to be rather tough to install as routing the existing wiring inside the box is very difficult, these wires need to lay in place of their own accord, not be tightened down under strain.    If this was a NEMA device I suspect the box would be about twice the size it is.  Replacing existing stranded wire with flexible SO cord would make it easier.  Others on this forum know a whole lot more about this than me and hopefully will chime in.  Edit:  now I'm going out to torque the lugs to spec which I did not do when I installed.  Yikes!

Yes, we need that distance shot.  My bed is across the coach with all the electrical gear below the head.  Their is plenty of room, but the EMS is the first in the chain, which would require a lot of rewiring to change.

Are you installing the EMS before or after gen/shore transfer switch? If before, the shore cable goes through the EMS, if after the only 50-amp main breaker cable goes through the EMS. There is only one AC panel with a 50-amp main breaker, the other is an AC sub-panel without a door, controlling inverter loads.

Read instructions carefully about removing relay plastic cover so you can check for strands of cable on EMS relay being too long.

So, The small panel to the left of the larger is coming from the inverter and I only need to address the lines going to the 50 amp breaker on the large panel to protect from the Gen. set and the shore power?

I have happily used the EMS PT50C version for at least 7 years now.  I even leave it in line when the coach is plugged in at the house.  Just another little measure of security.

I got the version that plugs into the power pedestal and leave it plugged in even at the shop. I check the LED readout now and then to see if there has been any incidents and what the current draw is on each leg.

There is some risk of theft this way, even with the security thing that can be locked but it's a whole bunch simpler. Just doesn't protect against generator problems.

Tweety's had the best price when I bought mine last year and they still do. I like mine a lot and wouldn't be without one now. No installation... just plug it in and plug yours in. I think it would still work on 30A connections as long as you used a converting plug.

Yes.  The protector is wired into the main 120 VAC panel.

I use the portable Progressive unit.  Just plug into the campground outlet first and it will tell you if you are good to go or not.  Keeps power surge out and cuts off if low voltage is received.  DAN

Does the unit work on 30 and 20 amp with adapters in its plug in cord?

Yes.  It is a 50A socket/plug.  You plug your coach's 50 amp cord into it,then use the 30/50A "dogbone" to take it to 30, and then a 30/20 amp adaptor.  I've done that when necessary...just don't tax that 20 amp cord...that is the "weak link" in such a setup.

Thanks.  Yes I have heated up/failed many 30 to 20 adapters long ago in setting up Rv shows and foretravel rallies.  Bought a new one last week as the one I have was well used.

Learned to feel the adaptor regularly during use just to see the load.  Some shows would not allow the 30 to 20.  Had to pay the show electrician to run real power.
