Title: Trans troubles
Post by: mark f on April 05, 2013, 03:11:03 pm
I took my bride for her first ride in the coach. She loves it, at least until we stopped for a roadside break. I set the parking brake, put it in neutral, left the engine running and we got out. When we went to leave it would not go into gear. It would beep and I could hear a relay clicking under the pass. dash. I shut down everything thinking it might do some sort of reset. No help. Kept on trying everything- then it worked. Trans shifts fine, not hot, fluid full, etc. We got home and parked the thing and I'm thinking it must be some sort of interlock problem, brake not set, doors open, who knows. After playing with it for a while I think my idle is set to high. 900 according to the dash tach. I was going to turn down the idle anyways because it wants to push so much when idleing-hard to park in my icy driveway. When I restart it now it shifts fine at 900 rpm but if I give it just a little more rpm it will not shift. Next road test I will turn down the idle and hope for the best. Anyone know of otherthings I should check? Thanks, Mark

Check this thread. Symptom: Trans drops out of D; Cause: Dash AC condensor fan motor shorted (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=17088.msg112529#msg112529) My issue was a loose ground wire.

Mark You should have the Bendix air throttle control. There is an air cylinder attached to a cable that pulls on the mechanical throttle of the 8.3 cummins. In time, these components will develop wear spots or get sticky and keep the throttle from returning to a full idle. Raise the bed and make sure this mechanism is allowing the pump shaft to go to it's stop. Also check the return springs. The cylinder can be easily cleaned and O rings replaced but if it is worn, it is no longer available.

Gary is right. The problem is most likely the high idle as Allison would not permit the coach to lurch forward at 900 rpms, but there may be an underlying reason the idle is a smidge too high. In addition, I ALWAYS pay attention to what BARRY BEAM has to say :)
