Title: Wiper Assembly broken, now stranded
Post by: minibeast on May 04, 2013, 03:10:57 pm
Driving south on I-85 in a pouring rain storm and the Driver's side assembly starts to break apart and proceeds to jam itself into the driver's mirror. Pull off safely on an exit and start calling trying to find somewhere to repair. 150 miles later, I'm pulled into an RV park to wait until Monday and Foretravel to open. Not a great end to this trip, but hopefully will be able to get up and running Monday, then back home

Try this site for parts http://store.stepvanparts.com/STEPVAN-PARTS-CATALOG.HTM (http://store.stepvanparts.com/STEPVAN-PARTS-CATALOG.HTM)
Rain-Ex should work until you can make repairs.

+1 on RainX. You don't even need a windshield wiper when you use RainX!!!

Bob , Belated thought... If a single arm wiper you can switch with the right arm just to get going.  If double arm I don't think that will work.

Folks,

Just to clarify, it's Mark (minibeast) that has the wiper arm disintegration problem.  Bob posted the links to the replacement parts.

Mark, not sure exactly what happened or if your year coach is included, but there was a recall on the wiper arm motor nuts a couple of years back - the nut somehow allowed the wiper arm to travel too far and cause the wiper to travel too far and catch below the window.  You might mention it to FOT when you call them Monday - see if the parts to repair would be covered under that recall.

I had my wiper arms tightened down and lock tight put on them as well a while ago.  Use rain x and you will not need your wipers for the most part.  Dirt and grime and mist sure but real rain will slide right off.  Hope you get it fixed up.

Update - Not sure if this is part of the recall or a result of the window replacement. Will find out later.
For now, the rain has quit and I can move forward tomorrow. Taking a day of rest after a little too much stress yesterday.
I'll check out the parts listed above to see if I can effect a temporary repair until I'm back at Nac in June. One part of the wiper, I'm guessing the non motorized part, came completely out of the front of the coach while the other arm snapped off at one of the weld points.
I normally keep my windshield coated in RainX but had not refinished it since both windshields had been replaced just before this latest trip.
