Wow! Glad ours has Carefrees!
They ought to address mechanical awnings also, possibly a hand that would extend out from the dash and give a slap in the face and say something like "Hey dumb$#@, engage the awning locks before driving." That way a guy couldn't have his awning unfurl while driving from home to Austin and have to stand on the shoulder on hwy 290 and try to roll it back up.
What was that? Something you saw on the side of the road. :P

Or going across the dam at Fort Cobb lake on a windy day in our old U280...err I meant to say we heard about some people who forgot the awning latch and the awning unwound going across the dam. ::)
Yes, you could say that. I got a good look at him in the mirror when he had his ass hanging out of a window with the rest of his upper body, holding on to the valence inside, trying to retrieve the little strap it looked like, because he didn't have a ladder.
Ever
My patio awning unfurled outside Amarillo on I-40 in 60 MPH winds and I had latched my awning. Had to get on rooftop and tape with duck tape....it was a mess. To resolve this I am always sure that my awning is properly latched but the safely factor is to use Velcro straps, 2 on both the front and rear awning arms, to be sure it is secute. No problem since then and don't want any!! For $5 buy the straps or make some yourself.....cheap insurance!!!
Fort Cobb Lake??? The dam is only 20 feet wide and we all know there is no wind in Oklahoma.
We too had that experience in West Texas traveling at 65 mph. The patio awning opened all of the way in the 50 mph cross wind. What's so unbelievable is that it did no damage to a 16 year old awning even at that speed. We just rolled it back up, locked the roller and headed on down the road. We later found about a yard of thread on the front seam broke loose but we didn't have to fix that until we returned home in the spring. We too now keep velcro straps around the uprights to insure it will not open up accidentally.
