Title: New Tires - Cost?
Post by: Gerry Vicha on May 22, 2013, 06:26:57 am
Has anyone bought new Toyo tires lately? I'm in FL and need to replace my 4 rears and need to make sure I don't over-pay. I am going to install 295 / 75 R 22.5 Either M 154 or M 147 so far @ $ 1,900.00 installed, :'( with no credit for old tires. Thanks ^.^d

Gerry,
When I got my tires a year ago, Toyo or Hankook were $415 each with $100 for each tire taken off that could be resold.

Jerry.
I bought 4 Toyos, M154, LR H, last week. $2400 installed, so that's a GOOD deal!

Gerry
Be sure to ask for DOT manufacture date of not more than 6-8 months. Mine were "3612", so I accepted them.

Let me see if my old brain cells can remember some tire info I picked up long ago. I think its still current.
There were two schools of thought on tire design. Basically the need to be able to control the vehicle after a tire failure.
Michelin went to thinner sidewalls so if you had a flat on the steering axle the sidewalls would shred and the rim come straight down onto the tread itself. No braking or twisting of the wheel please.
Bridgestone and toyo went the thicker sidewall route. Hold the tire up until it rolled to a stop. They were fixable depending on the severity of the failure.
Michelins destroyed the tire if severe enough failure.
My long ago experience driving the all the coaches was that the michelins steered a little more precisely on center. Medium radius turns were very good in steering accuracy. You could set the wheel in a corner radius and not have to saw at at it.
The toyos and bridgestones seemed similar in that they were good in all aspects but not sharp in the center point.
Only brought it to mind after all the play was removed from the front wheel bearings during the last seal replacement.
Michelins only need tiny corrections to stay straight and opposing trucks barely move the coach.
Heavy side winds today going on 160 and 89 and 64 into the Grand Canyon from the east were handled with medium wheel inputs. Not twitchy.
One hand if paying attention. No sudden darts for the rail. Others input on this stuff would be helpful. Maybe they all drive the same?

I have not posted much on the forum because with Barry's information and searching the forum all of my questions have been answered. I will need new tires soon so I have been following this. I know about the FMCA plan for Michelin tires and I may go that way. I have had Toyo tires on my trucks and they have been fine. I would like to go with them and save a few dollars but the 275/80 vs 295/75 size question seems like some people say 295s will hit the air bag plates. Will I have that problem? Thanks, Mark

Mark,
I have run 295/75 22.5 for years with no problems.
The size 295/80 22.5 is a larger diameter tire with more load carrying capacity and a much larger price due to it being a size not used by trucks. There are only two or three manufactures of 295/80 22.5 tires while 295/75 22.5 is produced by almost all tire manufactures.
I can get Toyo or Hankook for half the FMCA Michelin price. So do what makes you happy.

The 275/80 is almost exactly the same diameter as a 295/75 and most just call it a Michelin size. The 295 makes one less revolution per mile on paper but probably really depends on the tire manufacturer. Both sizes will touch the airbags in the front at certain times but only polish the plates and don't really touch the rubber bag that I can tell. I have never worried about it.
11.00 R 22.5s are way too tall to use unless in an emergency. I had one for a spare for a while.
