Title: securing the starting procedure
Post by: hotonthetrail on May 23, 2013, 12:40:25 pm
Beside removing the ign. key what would be an additional hidden system that could be added to make the procedure more difficult or impossible for an unauthorized start. jc

If your engine has one, you could install a switch for the fuel solenoid. No fuel, no go.

My 95 U280 has a ball valve just prior to the fuel filter.  Closing It would allow someone to drive off but when fuel was gone from filter they will be dead in the water.  Most thieves would not be smart enough to figure out what the valve controls and with a locked compartment they would not find it.
Works for me.

Disconnecting the batteries would slow them down a bit. Unfortunately it would likely slow me down, too, because I'd forget that I had disconnected them and spend an hour trying to figure out why the coach won't even turn over.

Gary, how far would someone get if you did as you mentioned, and how long would it take you to get the system back up?

Your Allison transmission has two 12 VDC hots/positive to it.  Put the larger one through a a dash switch.  The smaller one is for memory, the larger is required for the transmission shift pad to illuminate and engine to start.

We ALWAYS remove ignition key when stopped. Leaving the key in, is like having an invitation from the motorhome, on the dash telling a stranger up to no good, to drive me away.

A disconnect switch on the wire from ignition switch to ignition relay(s).

A ball valve on primary fuel filter input fitting (which can also keep fuel from flowing back to tank when changing filters.

Well, hate to admit this, but probably haven't removed key from ignition more than 3 times in 5 years...Someone has to step up..... ;D

I do not take it out either. I have an ignition key in there and the only time it has come out is when I have it at cummins and they drive and park it. Otherwise it is in the coach. It would not be hard to pull and start so why have the damage.  Also, it is either stored in the garage or at a campground or I am in it so I am not really worried about unauthorized starts.  In fact I doubt every much that someone could start it if I was in there.  Also, with the slides out the coach will not go into gear so that is a huge deterrent.

In many states it is illegal to leave your car keys in the vehicle while unattended. Good luck if it is ever stolen and you left the keys in it, insurance company may use that against you to avoid paying the claim.
Easiest place for car thieves to get a car? The post office. It still amazes me how many people leave their vehicle unlocked and running there.
I take my key out, don't need the aggravation.

The key for the PO box is on the car keys, so we have to turn the car off and take the keys in to get the mail. Yes, when I've had something to mail I've been known to leave the car running while I run in and stick the envelope in the slot, but at 7 a.m. there are few people around and those that are know me and I know them. Of course, downtown Urbana, MO is not exactly a hotbed of car theft. The police station is about 100' from the post office.

David, FRom storage, By the time they broke into the coach, removed the tire covers and WS cover, pulled the chock blocks and started it up and got air up they would not get far, even if they got rolling I suspect that fuel would run out real shortly, I am not going to test it to see.

Actually in many states it is illegal to leave a running car unattended. If it is not running the keys can be anywhere.
