Title: Air bag-air hose fittings
Post by: Lon and Cheryl on June 09, 2013, 02:19:29 am
I finally got around to the rear right side air bag replacement.
I struggled with the air line fitting that connects the air hose to the L fitting in the air bag. I thought it was a compression fitting, but when I loosened the air line fitting the air hose did not want to release from the fitting so I could turn the nut to remove. The air hose kept spinning with the nut.
I ended up cutting the air line so I could unscrew the nut.
Of course when I went to remove the L fitting from the airbag it sheared.

My questions;

Should the air hose release and spin free so the holding nut can be turned without the hose spinning with it, or is this a special air fitting that needs a different approach to separate.

I struck out finding a replacement at the hardware store, auto parts store, and Menards. It looked to me that the air line fitting had O-rings inside and not a compression fitting sleeve, I will try a Napa that stocks truck equipment Sunday.
Otherwise is there a source for these fittings? Granger maybe?

Thanks!

You can use a compression fitting, but it has to approved for air line use. The napa store should have that type of fitting. The ferrels and nuts are a little different from standard compression fittings

Page 78 of the catalog will show you the components of an air brake air line compression fitting. I would go to a truck shop that knows the equipment.

I went to a NAPA store today that was listed as selling HD truck equipment.
The clerk sold me compression fittings.
I installed the bags today and I think the fittings are leaking. I will find a truck shop or contact HWH and see if I can buy the fittings from them.

I mentioned that the fittings should be DOT approved to the NAPA clerk, he sort of shrugged his shoulders and mumbled, I knew I was on the wrong track then but thought I would give them a try. I could see the old fittings had a sleeve and a receptical for the sleeve inside the fitting, it was not a regular compression fitting.

Just for reference here's another supplier with views of the parts (I think it would be p/n 51835K254: 3/8" hose with a 1/4 NPT elbow):
Farther down the page are push on styles as well.  You can also get the DOT tubing as well from McMaster.
