Title: 12 volt compressor issues
Post by: Brad & Christine Slaughter on June 14, 2013, 11:07:44 pm
On my recent trip to Liberty Lake, I got a tip from the Foretravel tech about the compressor.  From what I learned from him and the other FT owners who were there, the compressor staying on every now and then seems to be a frequent issue, even to the point of burning them out if unattended long enough and the fuse doesn't get pulled.  Pulling the fuse, waiting for everything to cool down, then reinstalling it seems to cure the issue...but only if you are around to notice it.

Anyway, the tech told me that a better solution than pulling the fuse is that they mount a toggle switch on the compressor frame mount and put it in the line near the fuse.  Then it is an easier task to simply flip the switch instead of pulling the fuse as I (and others) had been doing when leaving it unattended for a period.

A $3.49 SPST heavy duty 10 amp switch and it's done!

Even easier if you run a pair of wires to the dash and mount the switch.
Saves a lot of back and forth to the bay.

Sounds like you are familiar with this issue, Barry.  I thought I was the only one for a while...LOL.

I don't think so. I believe there are lots more people with the air leaks and compressor running than what we read about here on the forum.
There are so many connections to deal with and sometimes very difficult to isolate the leaks. One of my near term projects is to run that line to the dash to a rocker switch with LED light. Nothing worse than that compressor going off when you are dry camping and sucking the batteries.
