Title: 1989 GV engine thermostat switch for 3208T
Post by: danieljeff545 on July 10, 2013, 10:48:03 pm
Just some information for you older FT owners...my 3208T engine thermostat switch that turns on the fan at the radiator went bad and the top broke off. Local CAT dealer said its not their part it's an Oshkosh part. Locally here I had a hard time finding anyone servicing anything Oshkosh. After some local searching and speaking with Oshkosh directly, Freightliner is now handling the parts for Oshkosh. Wolverine Freightliner here in Michigan was very helpful and located the part in Memphis. $100 + $30 for the overnight fee. Wish me luck on the install tomorrow. All part of my newbie learning curve...

I almost forgot...the part on the engine had no part # because it was a sticker. Once it arrives and I verify it all works I'll post the part number so you all will have it.

I saw another posting question about the thermostat on a Detroit motor and reviewed mine because I was corious about the temps. When I did I saw that I forgot the photos.

This got me thinking....my 3208T CAT can comes on at a hair over 200 and once the fan comes on it drops quickly to about 170. My mechanic and bus garage mechanic friend said that is well with temp ranges for my engine. Just wondering what others driving the 3208T are running at??

Jeff,

Our experience ove 50K mikes in 9 years. In our 88 300hp 3208T

200-210 fan kicked on, back down 160-180.
PO had sticker on dash 220 engine shuts down!

Fortunately, that never happened to us. I will say though, i have heeded to put in a gallon of water a time or two.. then antifreeze later.

Thanks John!  I feel better knowing that we are within reason then.  We are coming on about 9 months of ownership and I just really want to take good care of her. Engine mechanically inclined I am not so my learning curve feels long...
