Title: Tow Dolly
Post by: Yetch on July 12, 2013, 09:59:59 am
I am getting ready to purchase a tow dolly.  I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with the AcmeTowDolly?

Mike,
We had one for a couple of years. Had issues with the plastic fenders cracking. Additionally, the lights were mounted on the fenders which resulted in several modifications, eventually mounting the lights on metal brackets.

Just a thought, we too looked into a dolly but decided against it. We have a Buick 2005 LaSabre and tow it with all wheels down. We added a Remco Lube pump and made it towable. We have over 50,000 miles towing the car and no problem. With a tow dolly, we have seen many campgrounds not allowing dollies or trailers stored on the campsite. Most cases these items needed to be stored in their storage area, out of site. Sometimes, there was a fee for storage. Some will suggest you can back up with a dolly but that would be a real task of driving skills.

I'm partial to Master Tow,. I've had electric and surge models - I prefer surge. They are a no brainer. I've bought them used on Craigslist. I like their swivel pan, attached ramps design far better than the ACME.

. I could load and strap down my car nearly as fast as setting up 4 down. Consider a Craigslist search. You may find a used dolly nearby.

I used a Master tow I bought used for 3 years with no problems.  I agree with Dave I like the swivel base.
Due to tow bar weight and inconvience in some parks with parking the dolly I have moved to pulling 4 down.
Oh, also agree with Dave on surge brakes.

Sorry, thanks for the replies.  I have a new VW diesel Sportwagon, manual.  But I just do not want to have to deal with 4 down.  Not approved by VW, and don't want to subject front suspension to the stresses involved.  Saw a Demco KarKaddy SS at ppl for a pretty good price.  Surge disc brakes.

Yetch,
You might want to check with Remco on the tow ability of your VW 5 speed, Ford did not want my F150 5 speed towed, Remco sez if it had the Mazda  5 speed, just tow it, been towed over 35 k no issues yet.

Really!  PPL has them for $2600.  Do you have first hand experience with them, or know someone who does?  I'm wanting to order next week.
Thanks, Mike

For what its worth, we have five yrs towing with a Master Tow with surge brakes.  About 34k miles roughly.  It is a quality product.  It was under $1500 new with tax.  Worth considering.
