The first time the pin in the piano hinge on the front door dropped down (about 3/4 inch) I just took the hammer and 'whacked' it. ???
It had dropped down enough to obstruct closing the step.
The second time, I again percussively adjusted it.
The third time (out in the wilds of the state park at Copper Harbor, MI), I decided I'd better fix it for good. >:(
I drilled and tapped a hole and installed a #6 machine screw just above the next hinge.
Should be fixed!!
Elliott,
You should replace the white bushing that was where hinge pin is now visable. Top and bottom. They control the height of the door so the latch mechanism lines up and the door closes without having to lift the door.
The hinge will wear and so will the latch without the bushing.
Use a piece of Pex water pipe.
Cut it a little long with someone holding the door up.
File it off until you can just push it into the hinge then split it with a box cutter and work it in place over the hinge pin. Do both the top an bottom.
The door will close easy without slamming it and will save on latch and hinge wear!
We have done the Pex pipe that John recommended. We bought our pipe from Home Depot it came in 10' stick but you only need 2 pieces about an inch our so. So you will have more for future use. But it does do the job.
Great fix, what size Pex should i buy.??
Hans
