Title: 2003 entry door grab handle
Post by: Horace B. Cupp on July 15, 2013, 05:08:19 pm
Here we go again, new problem, old solution doesn't work. The lucite "s" shaped rod in my entry door handle is cracked. It has been repaired with epoxy once. I am afraid someone is going to wind up with a pratt-fall if it gives way. Mike at FOT assures me this fixture is no longer available and manufacturer (Trusty) is out of business. He is out of the handles but still has the brackets. Replacements from Fleming Sales in Elkhart do NOT have the same foot-print and will require some fiberglass work and painting to accomplish a decent repair.
Does anyone have an alternative solution? Are there any "pre-owned" lucite handles out there? Can a replacement be fabricated, if so by whom? Remember this is the "s" shaped rod in  lighted brackets with the doorbell push button in the top bracket.

Try pinging Jennifer at Xtreme.  She was asking the same question a couple of months ago and was checking with a supplier to see if the bar could be fabricated

'03 exterior grab bar needed (split from Part Number Collection) (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=17652.msg118641#msg118641).

IIRC, the 2003 uses a different handle.  They're longer than other years, I think.

Are these handles more than cosmetic?  I treat it like an orniment, never use as a handle.
Look tooo fragile to me.

Dave M You are obviously a youngster. Us senior citizens need all the boost we can get. Having said this, I realize that I have always used it  as a "grab handle". Present status involves a potential replacement from Jennifer Stallings that does not have sufficient seating in the brackets to be used as a grab handle, believe I will defer on this.

If you mean the lighted entry door handle, I just ordered one for our 2002 from FOT.  All they needed to know was whether we had a doorbell or no doorbell.  I had heard that they were difficult to come by, but apparently not.  Our replacement just slipped right into place.

Carol,

Let me guess - you don't have the doorbell, right?

Doorbell integrated into one of the mounting ends was unique to 2003, I believe, and that's where the problem lies.

Gee, I only use the wood inside handle.

GOOD NEWS. Today, I took the entry door grab bar assembly off. The lucite rod is not broken, It was all a false alarm created by a repair tech. I did take the opportunity to reseal all of the waterproof connections and put a new gasket under the bottom bracket.
