Title: CB radio mounting location?
Post by: Carol & Scott on August 01, 2013, 01:15:48 pm
Our PO mounted the Cobra on a small dash table that he must have built himself.  It is held in position by double sided tape.  Looks terrible.  Have found an extra mic that was probably OEM?

Am wondering what CB you folks use and where do you mount it?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Scott, I took the worthless one handed Cobra and threw it out, I mounted a small Cobra under the dash just below the camera screen.

I mounted my Colbra 29LTD on the outside wall to left of drivers seat.  Used industrial velcro. It is fairly out of sight.  Peels right off if I need to remove it.

Do you guys really use the CB in your travels? Back in the old days it was useful but what I hear now is most of the CB traffic is not that great. I have not even turned my hand held unit on yet.
I think it would be very helpful for road/traffic conditions and bear locations.

I do.  Started using CB way back in the early 1970s when driving over the road.  Have to say it has saved my butt many times in more ways than tickets.  Still using it in the motorhome.  Not a lot of people on it anymore, except when the skip is active.  Truckers still using it, but not like the old days.  Get around big cities and it can get bad.  Otherwise it is very quiet.

I would take that CB and use it as a tire chuck. Really not worth the time anymore having and many truckers do not use them. Those days went with the 8 track tapes and bell bottoms. Might look good still in older rigs, reminds you of the days when these rigs were new :P

There certainly is a lot of garbage on them today.  I too started using them in the 70's and also on the water.  Just listen mostly these days with the squelch on high.  It has alerted time and again about stuff that I wouldn't have known otherwise.  Accidents, police, traffic, rest stops, restaurants.....

Would like to keep mine - I think - but I haven't seen a convenient way to do it.

You can get weather alerts on the CB also, very useful.

With the weather alert CB radios does the CB have to be turned on for the weather alert to come through or will it alert you even when the CB is turned off?

Exactly. How do you program a CB to receive the alert for the county you are in? I think you have a weather radio, not a weather alert radio.

CB's are very useful at Foretravel events, where it's used to broadcast updates.  I turn mine on at low volume when weather looks suspicious.

The CB can be handy for Motorcade events. They are also useful at some truck scale locations. Ours is hidden in the panel left of the driver (I think). The controls, speaker, and microphone are in a hand held unit that hangs on a hook near the driver's right knee.

The CB radio that I had when I was driving big rigs had a NORAD function that if turned on it made no difference if the CB was on or off, a NORAD alert would cause the CB to give a loud piercing sound. The only thing that would stop alerts from coming through was to physically disconnect the power. I was startled from sleep a few times with NORAD "tests". Was a neat CB and when I get around to replacing the one that came with our coach I will be looking for one with the same features.

I mounted my CB Radio with Coast Guard Weather in the dash under the Silverleaf but above the AM/FM CD player. I removed the original rear view/Audit video monitor which left a hole in the dash that I enlarged for the Silverleaf and CB Radio. I replaced the original monitor in the dash with one on a swivel mount at the top of the dash. I also replaced the Audit system with a See-Level system with two displays, one in the kitchen and one to the left of the driver seat. I also moved the CB antenna from the driver side roof beside the AM/FM antenna to the passenger side roof. For some reason, Foretravel installed both AM/FM and CB antennae on the driver side on my coach (build 4943). The CB antenna could not be tuned properly. In the picture, on the dash is an SWR meter, which is used to check CB antenna tuning annually.

Carol & Scott.
My 2003 came with a small Midland unit mounted on the bulkhead at the drivers left knee (just inboard from the Allison controls). The Cobra unit was still under the dash but I took it out and gave it to good will. I only turn the CB on for caravans and for traffic delays, even then it doesn't seem to help much.
